Related to the density of the area, the Pulosari and its surrounding area is one of the densest populated area in Bandung, so do the building density. Moreover, social economic problems also become the interesting issue in Pulosari area. There is a fact that not all the slum dwellers are the poor due to a sightseeing observation of the housing condition in the location and also the survey result of their incomes and expenses. While the infrastructure seems as substandard, some buildings represent a good quality in material and structure, also its façade. The other important point is the ecological conflict problems. The Pulosari and its surrounding area located on the periphery of Cikapundung River. In this area, the riverbank almost covered by the buildings. Moreover, the domestic sewerage streamed directly to the Cikapundung River. As the consequences, the water quality has been
Gentrification is the process of improving a struggling neighborhood for affluent people. One of the main causes of this shown by Kelefa Sanneh’s article “Is Gentrification Really a Problem?” , is the real estate market. Things that affect the value of something in a certain neighborhood can end up having a direct influence in all of the neighborhood and can lead to gentrification. The construction of a luxury apartment building can attract more businesses and in turn, more high-quality living spaces which could eventually displace someone living three blocks away.
The tap water started smelling like sulfur and chlorine, and came in different color like urine and rust. This created many health concerns within the community, where

The purpose of the following essay will be to define civic engagement and to discuss the many types of ways in which a citizen can collaborate and engage with other member of their community. The concept of Civic engagement can be better understood as the act of community participation or involvement. The development of civic engagement in communities has been the cause that initiated many of the greatest movements in history, in the areas that concern both the political and the social factors of society. Throughout this essay I will argue the importance of implementing the practice and the values of civic engagement in order to create a healthy, working society, as well as to define and discuss the ramifications of civic engagement for both
Poverty, healthy and slums were the part of serious problems for UK between 19th to 20th centuries, a lots of people who was living under the poverty line, some of people even didn’t have enough food for themselves and their family. According the book “The Classic Slum” published by Robert Roberts in 1971, which showed poverty, illness and social negative environment in Salford slum of United Kingdom. Gilded: covered in gold, but that’s not the reality of this age with political corruption and corporate financial misleadings. Gilded in this case was anything but gold. Political, social, and economic conditions in the late 1800’s such as the railroads built in the south made by the slaves who were uneducated due to segregation which was ignored because slavery was over, making it seem life was golden leading to the term The Gilded Age. There were laws against certain people coming into The United States. This country was supposed to be a place of freedom, yet we were stopping people from coming into this country, certain things such as the Chinese exclusion act of 1882, which was then followed by restriction on admitting criminal + mentally ill.
Wealth is one of the factors why residential segregation is an increasing problem. Golash- Boza explains, “Residential segregation happened when different groups of people are sorted into discount neighborhoods” (271). It is because of housing segregation
With little more money than homeless folk, many underprivileged people reside in slums where the streets are broken and the homes are falling apart. Alana Semuels reports in her article that “living in slums is rising at an extraordinary pace”, mostly due to urban sprawling and demands for capital in cities (Semuels). The problem for many of the packed and overcrowded towns is that they are “without sanitary water or basic roads”(Semuels), causing great burdens and peril for citizens. Due to the unkempt resources, birth rates in slums tend to be lower than those in other areas while life expectancy will be shorter. Even with the creation of many government programs, such as those that place people in newly-built affordable housing, the abandoned neighborhoods still require maintenance or a crisis like a poor child “eating lead paint,” because “the building had not been updated since the 60’s”(Semuels).
In addition, the pollution spread into the water as well, all the waste within the factory had to be removed. Instead of properly disposing of the waste, it was dumped in the rivers. By doing this it contaminated the river, causing people to become ill. “As countries industrialized, they also urbanized. This was a result of people moving to cities in large numbers in order to gain factory jobs” (Document 6).
Participatory citizens active and helpful in their community by volunteering and by organizing different events. In the Background Essay it says “Participatory ctizens take a more active role in the affairs of their community. They volunteer to serve on community committees and organize community events. They organize the coat drive for the homeles, coordinate the community blood driv, host the neighborhood block club, or serve on the city council. Participatory citizens look after their fellow citizens.
Effect of Gentrification: Introduction In this paper I will describe and explain the impact of gentrification on people of color living in the greater Seattle area in the regards to the issues of accessing housing. Ruth Glass coined the term “gentrification” in 1964 to describe the phenomenon of middle-class settlement in previously working class neighborhoods and the subsequent displacement of the working class residents. In response to these negative images, those with a stake in the process of gentrification, including developers, city planners and new residents, have attempted to replace the term with a variety of alternatives: revitalization, renaissance, rehabilitation and reinvestment (Ruth Glass). Rising property values in the light
According to Preserving Affordable Housing is Green (2008), affordable housing during the renovation process creates healthier living environments. It resolves a big number of slums in many cities in the universe such as Dharabi in Mumbai, Kibera in Kenya and Kadwe in Zambia where lack of good condition and serious unsanitary. By this way, affordable housing receives positive idea such as “If construct affordable housing, then the remainder of the slum can be raised. This could change the whole lifestyle of Kibera” (Lunami, n.d.). Also, affordable housing always has sewerage system, fresh water and collecting garbage services, so people they do not have to live based on the dirty channel as well as let out waste water into the river or channels which moving around the urban center.
There will be both supporting and opposing arguments on whether there should be free-housing provided to poor and homeless people. The article, “Free housing should be a universal right” gives reasons on why there should be free housing, also possible methods to achieve free housing. The idea of free housing is to give houses and accommodations to those that lack resources so they are able to prosper and live their lives. Free housing is supported by the ideas of basic rights and the well being of people. Housing is one of human’s basic needs to function.
The main ideas of these two explanatory frameworks for the causes of gentrification have driven a theoretical conflict to explanations of gentrification, but more importantly, that these theoretical approaches are complementary and thus a more effective insights result from the combined application of these theories could be

CCDP aims to actualize the vision of community work using a grassroots and gradual approach. It reconsiders local culture, promotes residents’ participation, repairs the community’s relation with nature, practices the value of mutual help and friendship, and develops community
