I lived in Bandung, a city known as “Parijs van Java,” located far in the bottom of south-east Asia region, Indonesia. My favorite moments residing in this city was when sitting in a car doing nothing but staring at the windows and being captivated by the view that present in my car windows. No matter what direction you saw you could always catch volcanic mountain view from the heart of the city because of its basin shape. Going north, you could view tea plantations with the humid air that serve you a refreshment from cities hustle and bustle. But not much later, green areas and open spaces are mainly built into a stack of cement and concrete. Soon, despite fascinated by the view, I spot slum area that hurt my eyes. Characterized by its density, disorder of the buildings, and limited facilities qualities. It’s already spread out in Bandung, the city where I was raised from birth that priorly full of green areas. Graduated as environmental engineer assure me to believe maintaining the excellent quality of natural and built environment is essential. I am wondering how could environmental consideration weight equally as social and economic consideration. I wish to could work with Robert B. Olshanky, not only he has been involved in post-disaster recovery management in Indonesia, but he covers land use and environmental planning, with an emphasis on planning for natural hazards. Passionated in investigating local implementation of environmental policies, I will learn how local environmental planning practice fits within the broader context of environmental policies. Also to work with Dustin Allred, to look up for urban governance, sustainable development and processes of urban restructuring
