Commitment is one of the single most valuable characteristics an individual can possess. Wise words from the great Michael Jordan, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying again”(Michael Jordan). Commitment is more than just a verbal agreement. Commitment is, “the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc”(Webster Dictionary). Being committed could be the difference between allowing an obstacle to deter an individual from their course to success or simply being a speed bump on their road to greatness. A vision involves painting the entire picture of what the final product is intended to present. Often times an individual anticipates their success solely depending on the actions they make. In reality,“When it comes to achieving what you want in life, it’s rare that you can do it entirely on your own” (Roth 95). Roth explains despite an individuals end result of success may only serve them it is often times built with the support of others. Achieving your goals without the assistance of others is doable but done with less of an ease, “To reach a port, we must sail—Sail, not tie at anchor—Sail, not drift”(Franklin Roosevelt). The previous characteristics are useless if an individual is not completely invested in the outcome of their journey to success. A famous spokesman by the name of Inky Johnson was faced with a life altering injury that could have prevented him from fulfilling his goal to provide for his family, but to the contrary, that was not in his plans. Inky Johnson’s famous, “The process is more than the product to me”(Inky Johnson). Inky Johnson’s ultimate goal was to provide for his family playing the sport he loved. Unfortunately his athletic career was cut short. Instead of using this injury as an excuse to not fulfill his goal he used his desire to provide for his family as the driving force to complete his goal. Desire means not allowing the minor infractions in life take away from the finished product. Roth believes, “It entails developing some self-mastery to handle the difficult aspects of our lives…”(Roth 26).
