Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne are just few of the many artists which belonged to the post impressionism movement. This movement I significant to the art history as it rebelled against the traditions of the Impressionist style and took a new and improved approach. I have chosen to focus on this movement as I think it has a big impact on art history and the movement is home to some amazing artists and outstanding art work. My main focuses in this essay is some background on the movement and some if its influences and importance. As well as famous works from various artists and a look into how it was produced etc. Finally, I will go on to talk about two artists who played major roles in this movement where I will discuss their personal life …show more content…
In particular Vincent van Gogh had incredible pieces of work. In particular, “A pair of shoes” (figure 1). This oil on canvas was painted in the year 1886 and there are many theories of why it was painted. Some people say these boots were a sign of Van Gogh’s struggle through life as the painting gives of a depressing atmosphere through the dark colours. Others say these shows were bought to be worn down to then become messy and in some state. (Van Gogh Net 2009). I personally believe that these shoes symbolise Van Gogh’s tough life and his struggles through it. Another famous painting is from Paul Gauguin. “Tahitian Women on the beach” (figure 2) this painting was painted the year 1891 and is oil on canvas it shows two women sat on a beach. This painting gives off a relaxing atmosphere as it is painted with warm colours. This painting reminds me of a holiday setting and it makes me …show more content…
All though Van Gogh’s work did not become well-known or recognised till after his death, his work is now celebrated and loved years on. Van Gogh had issues from a young age as he had an upsetting upbringing as he was always reminded of the stillborn baby that passed away a year before he was born who had the same name as he did. This saddened Van Gogh. (The Biography 2015). These issues spread into his adult years where depression and psychotic phases began to arouse. During these phases Van Gogh stared to excessively drink alcohol and minimise his food intake. The unusual behaviour didn’t end there. When angry Van Gogh insanely cut off piece of his ear with a razor (Wikipedia 2017). This clearly shows that Van Gogh suffered horribly from poor mental health. This lead to Van Gogh spending time in a mental asylum where he painted one of his most famous paintings “starry night” (figure 3). (Ted ED 2015). This painting was produced in the June of 1889 during his time in the asylum. The painting is noticeable for its outstanding brushworks and dream like style. I find this painting interesting as I find the way in which he applied the paint thickly and the incredible movement in which the curves lead your eye through the work amazing. Painting skills and artistic talent was mainly self-taught as he would replicate different images from sketch books and teaching books from his time.
During this time it is known that he hit a creative streak painting some of his most famous paintings - such as Starry Night - and was given an extra room in the asylum to use as a studio. He unfortunately suffered many relapses of his worsening mental illnesses, eating his own paint at one point, and was restricted to drawing. It is believed that during this time he completed over 150 paintings. In January of 1890, during his year in the asylum, Vincent Van Gogh received a birth notice from his brother and sister-in-law - Vincent Willem Van Gogh was named after him - Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom as their
Vincent van Gogh faced challenges daily that he struggled to overcome. From his mom not approving of his art at a young age, to his internal battles of depression and suicidal thoughts (Naifeh 11-12). While alive, he sold only one painting for the equivalent of $80 in today’s currency, causing him to view himself as a failure (Wallace 7). Even though he lost his battle with his suicidal thoughts, he still became known as one of the founding fathers of modern art. This sadly did not happen during his lifetime and was noticed not until 25 years after his death (Wallace 7).
The art produced today has been influenced by the rebellious founders and their development of the impressionism movement. Even though the first exhibition of the impressionism movement was not as successful as they hoped, it was the starting point for a new way of thinking about and creating
Van Gogh was regarded as one of the greatest Dutch painters. He didn’t become popular until after his death and only recently. His use of vivid colors and emotions changed the way people and gave more knowledge of what art really was. Even though the painting was ruined, many other artists have created their own reinterpretation of his well known painting called “The Painter on the Road to Tarascon”.

Unfortunately he was unsuccessful be coming famous artist during his life, and was demeaned a failure and a madman. Van Gogh’s artwork only became famous after his suicide in the year of 1890. Vincent van Gogh is known for many things; his passion for art, his troubled life, and his struggle with mental health. However, as time has progressed, more and more information has surfaced about Van Gogh’s life and ambitions. For example, some of the important information found tells us of the artists spiritual life, most importantly, his stance on religion and how it had affected him. In fact, religion played such a role in his life, it affected everything from his career, to his art, to his relationships and beliefs. To demonstrate, with this new information, it is easy to assume that if the artist had taken only a few different steps, we would not even know about his famous paintings.
Some of the things that were present in the painting, from
Given that, there is also a pressures for Van Gogh to sell artwork, he adopts a lighter palette (The Art Story). Majority of Van Gogh famous works were produced during the last two years of his careers as-well-as life. In 1888, Van Gogh stars to live together with Paul Gauguin, a French artist. While working together, they have developed a concept
I sat on the grainy wood floor of the art studio, dog-earing pages of Van Gogh’s early charcoal sketches of poor, working men. With few lines and simple shape, he was able to convey an entire existence. With sweeping and curved strokes, he created cypress trees in motion, swaying back and forth. In my own work, I wanted to replicate the masters. I relished the slow and concentrated process of drawing and painting, the mixing and layering of color, the shading underneath a cheekbone or on the crease of an eyelid, all to represent exactly what I saw.
Thus, this artwork matters, unlike the thoughts of the 19th-century art critics. Being ahead of his time, Van Gogh started the art form of expressionism through this
It is widely known that Van Gogh was not the most stable person mentally, and many thought that it was depicted in his many paintings. Vincent Van Gogh through his painting The Starry Night has used color, layout, and symbolism to convey his mental illness. Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night is without a doubt an expressive and captivating artwork. The painting depicts a compact village that is completely illuminated, save for the prominent church in the middle of the town.
This self-portrait was painted shortly before Van Gogh’s departure for the south of France, at a time when his mood was clearly on the verge of depression. He uses bright colors and lively brushstrokes. This painting makes me wonder what is on the canvas that he is working on. You can view the sadness in his eyes, and relate to his situation. This painting displays harmony because he looks very focused and in tune with his work.
Their partnership wasn’t ideal, Van Gogh was stubborn and temperamental, the union of the two artists ended at the end of the year in 1888, when Van Gogh pursued Gauguin with an open razor and ended up cutting off a piece of his own earlobe. After that incident, Van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to a mental hospital in Saint-Remy, France. During the two-year period he spent in the hospital, he created over 150 paintings including The Irises and The Starry Night. Van Gogh was then released from the hospital and moved to Auvers-Sur-Oise, France to live closer to his brother Theo, who had been supporting him financially and his doctor, Paul Gachet. He died only two months after his release from the hospital, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is a large scale painting around 1.72 m x 2.78 m. Due to large scale it is very easy to visualize all the things which painter was trying to show. Moreover if it will be a small one then the things which he adds in the painting could never done it so beautifully. This painting uses lot of green, blue and light brown colors.
The portrait represents the beauty of the time period. It holds simplistic colors with detailed shading. The artwork is very intriguing to me. I love the detail in the background, there are tiny brushstrokes that makes up the mountains and sky. Also, I find the shading of the mouth and eyes very interesting.
