Vasily Zaytsev
When one thinks about the greatest sniper of all time, only one person fits the description: Vasily Zaytsev. Vasily Zaytsev has fought many battles and killed many people in the defense of his home Stalingrad. He not only is a great soviet sniper he is one of the greatest snipers of all time. Vasily has had some harrowing moments in his life, but he has always come out alive and strong. From being born into a peasant family, to being the most well known sniper of the Soviet Union, Vasily Zaytsev has led an intriguing life. Vasily was under suppressing fire by machine gunners on the axis side, he gunned down the machine gunner and then two more Axis soldiers from 600m. Another action was when Vasily saw a Nazi officer standing in a window, he shot the officer dead and then two other soldiers at 800m. These actions earned him a sniper rifle or to be specific a “Mosin Nagant with a 4x PE scope It is bolt operated and magazine fed with x5 rounds” ( Vasily Zaytsev Hero of the Soviet Union). This was the beginning of Vasily Zaytsev’s sniping career. Vasily already knew how to use a rifle because of his hunting proficiency from when he was younger which only added to his skill. Which in turn led him to become one of the most well known snipers. Vasily made up a strategy called sixes which consisted of squads of two, a sniper and a scout going to different areas to spot and shoot any incoming enemies. Vasily was also a master at hiding, he would find areas behind flak gun shells to hide behind and would eradicate an enemy squad. “Eventually between November 10th and December 17th he killed 225 people not including kills with his ppsh-41 sidearm” (Vasily Zaytsev Hero of the Soviet Union). His main area he battled in was Stalingrad. Eventually over the years Vasily was not a sniper anymore, but a sniping teacher. “His students credited over 6,000 axis kills” (Vasily Zaytsev - Russiapedia). Vasily then died in December 15th 1991, just 11 days before the Soviet Union was disbanded in December 26th,

General Zaroff has been hunting since he was a young boy. Since he has hunted for so long, he was starting to get bored because it was so easy. He was so skilled he had to find bigger, harder prey, but when they were starting to get too easy again, he decided to change his weapon. Instead of using a strong gun to kill them faster, he started using a .22 caliber rifle. He is such a great aim that this is still fairly easy for him
One time when General Zaroff was hunting he got hurt by an animal attack but he got him back. He is pretty tough and he is very smart. Both of them were good at hunting but both had different ways of seen hunting. Zaroff saw it as a game where you could hunt anything or anyone that was weak.

Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.

According to Quora.com, the first ever documented use of snipers was in the American Revolution. The short story, “The Sniper”, takes place in the Irish Civil War. Two snipers discover themselves on the same territory, both trying to kill the other. After being hit, the protagonist fakes his death. His plan gives him an easy kill on the enemy sniper.
Without craft moves made by the author, the story wouldn’t even be a legitimate story, just some thoughts put together. Two out of the many very important craft moves in The Sniper are the setting/time period and the point of view. The setting and time period is very crucial to The Sniper. The book takes place in Dublin, the capital of Ireland, during the Irish Civil War. In the beginning of the story, the author paints a very clear picture of the setting, allowing you to vividly imagine the conditions that they are in during the short story.

He gives us a vivid description of the sniper that makes us wonder about him, “His face was the face of a student, thin and ascetic, but his eyes had the cold gleam of a fanatic. They were deep and thoughtful, the eyes of a man who is used to looking at death” (1). These two sentences give us information of the sniper based solely on the words of the author. The way O’Flaherty describes him makes us think about what he does and who he actually is outside of being a sniper.
