The gaming industry is a huge market. In the United States alone, 18.4 billion dollars was made in 2017 (Fuller). Teenagers contribute a large portion of that money, for 72% of them play video games on their smartphones, computers, or gaming consoles (Lenhart). As this number will surely increase with the advancement of technology and new video games releasing, more fingers will be pointed to the negative side effects. Nearly 44% of parents believe that video games are detrimental to their children (Usher). However, many people do not realize the many positive things that come from gaming. This coordination revolves around communication in order for everyone to be on the same page. While the gamers more than likely do not realize it, this improves their interaction skills while also teaching them how to work together (Eugenio). Another aspect of playing multiplayer is the ability to play with your friends. By communicating and playing with friends, players can remain connected with their companions without having to be in the physical presence of each other; this also allows friends to become closer together while bonding over something they both enjoy. Moreover, many people are able to come together and play in the same room together on one console, giving them a mutual attraction to enjoy together. Gamers are also able to make new friends all over the world in many multiplayer games. New friendships are often formed when new players meet. While this rarely leads to deep relationships, it does improve greeting skills and the ability to be comfortable meeting someone new. Violent video games are said to lead to less helpful behavior in children, however, studies have shown that pro-social games lead to helpful behavior shown by children (Chebli). Even if violent games lead to less helpful behaviors, parents should have the control over their children to ensure their underage child does not play those games until they are the appropriate age. Another aspect that some may see as a bad thing is the desensitization a player may get to “disturbing” things (Sabella). While this may be an issue with the typical person, this desensitization is beneficial to doctors, military members, or other professionals that should not feel any emotions while on the job (Sabella). Addiction claims are placed upon kids for playing too much—these addictions can lead to loneliness, depression, social withdrawal and increased irritability (Chebli). However, parents should be in charge of monitoring and ensuring their kids do not become too engrossed in their gaming consoles. Allowing their children to play an hour or less a day can prevent addiction arising within their child’s life. The downsides of video games are undeniable even if the pros outnumber the cons, but with the help from adult figures, adolescents can lessen the likelihood of these problems affecting the gamers. Gaming will always remain a strong aspect in teenage society across the globe. The media, parents, and even young peers may point out the downfalls of gaming
