On March 8th, 1965 the United States officially entered the Vietnam War. A war that was supposed to be fought between the North and South side of Vietnam. The war lasted between 1955 to 1975, with over 58 thousand US soldiers being killed, 2 Million Vietnam civilians being murdered and over a million Vietnamese and Vietcong soldiers also dying. The Vietnam War heightened social and political tension in the United States from 1964-1975.
As soon as you turned 18 as a male in the United States you were at risk of being drafted and forced to serve the country and fight in the war. To many that ideal was startling as they were still teenagers and had to face death. Many people found controversies in the idea of forcefully being drafted, having

During the Vietnam War he was at the age of getting drafted, insteading of drafting he chose jail over fighting in the war for his country. His reasoning as to why he would rather go to jail instead of drafting causes social tension in the United States. During this time period, he was still getting denied simple human rights all because he was black and living in America. ¨If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to twenty-two million of my people. They wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow.¨(doc 2). He refused the draft because he wasn't getting treated with basic human respect in this country, so why would he risk his life for the United States? There was another way to defer the drafts, besides having a medical condition, a doctor's note, or not supporting the war. Many upper-middle-class and wealthy people who could afford college would attend and it would give the person a deferment for as long as they were in school. But it will only cause more social tension, ¨ 80% of the soldiers were white lower-class or minorities¨ (Blass) If you could not afford the cost of college you were drafted causing most of them to be a part of the working class while the wealthier kids were able to stay in America and attend college every instead of being shipped off and forced to fight in a deadly war (doc 6). This college deferment favored the wealthy people causing the minorities and
As President Roosevelt signed the selective training and service act of 1940. As the country’s first peacetime draft and formally established the act as an independent federal agency within the department of defense. Even before this there was a long history of drafting citizens to serve in the armed forces. Why drafting would be a bad idea, the training considerations, time lag, standards would drop, and high costs would be some bad ideas.
Therefore, this choice was another important stride that he takes towards becoming a mature adult. Becoming a part of the war was an important part of young men’s lives, but it did not affect the entire population, much like the country’s lack of
Vietnam War Location: Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Date: November 1, 1955 – April 30, 1975 Vietnam war: The Vietnam War was the second-longest conflict in United States history, following the war in Afghanistan. Guarantees and promises to the people and power of South Vietnam to retain communist forces from reaching them reached back into the Harry Truman Administration. Dwight Eisenhower set military authorities and CIA operatives in Vietnam, and John F. Kennedy gave American soldiers to Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson directed the first true combat by American troops, and Richard Nixon closed the war.
The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, was one of the most divisive and controversial conflicts in American history. It was a military conflict between the Communist North Vietnam, and South Vietnam, with the United States and other Western powers supporting the Southern Vietnamese. The war was fought in the context of the Cold War because the United States feared that Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia if North Vietnam managed to take control of the entire country. The war had such a profound impact on American society, and still remains a subject of intense debate and analysis today. After World War I, Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, expressed many grievances against the French colonialists.
The draft was used in war time to choose avaliable men aged 18 and older. This was a controversial topic because this was forcing young men to put their lives on hold and be forced to go fight a war in a foreign country. Men that just graduated high school were shipped off to fight in wars that had nothing to do with them. The only way to avoid the draft was to have a serious medical condition, or to flee the country. Instead of a draft he wanted to implement an all volunteer force (CHANCE).
The Vietnam war was a troubling war that lasted from 1955 to 1975. It was located in Vietnam and was fought by the U.S., as well as North and South Vietnam. There was bloodshed from both sides and many innocent lives lost. The Vietnam war was not only a troubling time in Vietnam, but also for the United States. Richard Nixon was the United States president at the time of the war and was the one that pushed America into joining the war, but realized he only cared about winning.
The Vietnam War was the most controversial war in American history. The United States promised to help any country who was threatened by communism. In the beginning, many Americans supported the United States getting involved and helping South Vietnam. When the truth started coming out and people realized the war was not almost over, people’s feelings changed toward the idea of war. Many Southern Vietnamese people were killed because the American soldiers couldn’t tell who was who.
Vietnam War: The U.S. Didn’t Lose to the Viet Cong Sullivan Watson August 5, 1964. The U.S. sprung into battle after an alleged attack from North Vietnam. The following war was a long 20-year conflict between South Vietnam and Communist North Vietnam. Both sides were eventually supported by world superpowers, caught at the same time in their own Cold War. The U.S. backed the South, and the Soviet Union defended the North.
Once America was pulled into WWII the whole nation became close together through nationalism and they all had a goal to work together as a nation and defeat the axis powers and to help the effort in any way possible including the draft. “Americans from every group got together in the service having a common goal to defend their country and, of course, a common experience.” (Ruschmann 53). All the men who were drafted during WWII and Vietnam War had all shared the same experience whether that was if they died in the line of service or made it back to tell the tale, they all experienced the horrors of war and in a way it brought them together. The men drafted did everything together as one no matter what they looked like or where they came from or what they believed in they all were in the fight.
“The end of the draft also has dramatically improved commitment and morale in the armed forces. The difference is simple: recruits who want to serve and succeed are likely to perform better than draftees who want out, the sooner the better.” (Bandow). Individuals who voluntarily serve have officially occupied themselves with the thought of being able to step up to plate and defend their country are rationally the right people to serve in war. So when a person who does not have the courage or desire to serve is drafted they just become a danger to the rest of the group.
One of the reasons for the mass majority of Americans against the United States involvement in Vietnam was the draft process that was either the working class men or men who are poor was being drafted while the wealthy eligible men were able to get around this process. The other that angered most of the American public was the age restriction was lowered from 26 to 19 years’ old (Gillon, Steven M. web), a lot of those who were protesting against the United States involvement in Vietnam had strong concerns, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who in March of 1967 led a protest in Chicago against the United States involvement said that “war was a blasphemy against all that America stands for” (Hall, Simon, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr). This brought
To him, enrollment in the military should be a voluntarily action rather than the used of draft. He said American cannot sit to see the brutalities and the death of the numerous soldiers abroad. He argues Americans are killing each other because of their divided ideological differences. There were antiwar and anti-draft movement who were all against the war. Anti-war movement was agitating for immediate end to the war while anti-draft movement was agitating for the abolition of the draft.
The poor draft decisions of the president caused agitation and terror among eligible citizens. Hundreds of troops were needed because of the heavy losses the United States faced across the Pacific, so the Selective Service heavily drafted citizens. This became highly controversial as the draft was disproportionate domestically. A major problem with the drafting process was how you could pay to have your draft request dissolved. This was expensive, however, so most of the drafted consisted of the less fortunate and minorities.
While perhaps four out of five of my friends from Harvard were being deferred, just the opposite was happening to the Chelsea boys.” this highlights how the draft was unfair and unjust to people of the lower class because they didn't have deferments like college or a doctors note that could be faked. They had nothing to stop them from going to war and that was unjust and unfair. In Doc 10, during Martin Luther King's "Beyond Vietnam" speech in 1967, he says” It became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home. It was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population.
Throughout history, the United States have only drafted soldiers in two wars, World War II and Vietnam. Thousands of teenagers who had just turned 18 were selected to go fight overseas in Vietnam. Soldiers only had eight weeks to prepare before getting deployed in enemy territory. The young soldiers that were drafted were assigned to infantry positions. The horrifying eyewitness accounts the soldiers witnessed led to psychological changes in their behavior for the rest of their lives.
