The War of Vietnam, one of America's deadliest battles that they never even finished. South Vietnam needed someone to aid and protect them from the South and America did help, but in the end certain decisions, people, and events made them pull out of it, leaving South Vietnam vulnerable. When they could, the North swarmed the South, taking villages, cities, and provinces while the United States stayed home and watched it all happen. American viewpoints on the situation turned once President Nixon resigned and a new party was hosting. The democrats were not happy with what has happening so they came to a conclusion and made of the most life changing decisions for everyone in the world. The spread of communism in Southern Vietnam was caused because …show more content…
Now that Kennedy was gone, he would have to make decisions and take control in the ongoing Vietnam War. Some of these decisions good and some bad. One of Nixon’s tactics was to threaten North Vietnam with bombs. America pledged to drop a series of bombs on them unless they attended a conference, The Paris Peace Accords. In the past, North Vietnam discontinued their attendance to the conferences, basically saying they are out of the agreements. If North Vietnam attended a meeting and rejoined The Paris Peace Accords, America stated that they would not bomb them, so they went and made an agreement. The meeting was a success, they were able to get North Vietnam as well as the Viet Cong to sign. America thought that they had won the battle even making it a celebratory day called VV Day (Victory in Vietnam Day). Even though North Vietnam had Signed, they did not quite give up. In the terms, it stated “should the South require any military hardware to defend itself against any North Vietnam aggression we would provide replacement aid to the South on a piece-by-piece, one-to-one replacement”. At this point, America still had Advisers and other Military Personnel in the South, just as a safety. The spread of communism would not happen for a while until The Watergate Scandal. June 17 1952 was a hard day for President Nixon as his plans had been foiled. These plans did not have anything to do with …show more content…
It started off as a great plan to send help, slowly that plan has been going downhill. 3 Presidents have come and gone and the war is still ongoing, America has made great attempts to stop it but most have just temporarily halted the North attacks. It was time for a new president to come into office and try to resolve the issue, this was Gerald Ford the 38th President of the United States. Ford was under a lot of pressure when he came into office, America was a divided country on opinions of the war. The majority of Democrats wanted to abandon South Vietnam and bring home their soldiers. Ford did not agree with this as he was the President and he wanted to keep America's word, he tried and begged to the congress to stay in the war, but as he was pleading, most of the congress got up and walked out on him. Nobody cared for Vietnam anymore, it had taken too much time, money, and lives for a war that still had not been resolved. The newly created democrat congress used their power to de fund the effort and this would send many American soldiers back home. Although this was great for those soldiers, it was not for South Vietnam. They could not defend themselves from the North by themselves but now they had no help. They were bound to be attacked and taken over, and they were. Once most soldiers had left, the North took their chances violating the peace agreement and attacked. On April 30th, the North had made it to
However, in a letter sent by the USSR to America shows the Soviet Union’s desire to reach some sort of a treaty stating that “… be coupled with the conclusion of a peace treaty.” (Source L) Likewise, the focused military action by, at that time, the strongest military force in the world on Vietnam, a much smaller, much poorer country. (Source I). The economic resources spent on the Vietnam War by the United States, could have funded a humanitarian effort to provide basic human rights to those affected by the civil conflict.
Nixon dedicated a $100-million to begin the war on cancer. However, during the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong signed a peace treaty but the American people knew that once the US took all of their soldiers out of Vietnam that the North would continue their invasion into the South. Just as predicted they did. The end result of this was that the South’s capital, Saigon, fell and caused the South to become Communist. Also causing surrounding countries to fall into Communism.
When Richard Nixon was president he established good connections with China and the Soviet Union. Nixon hated Communism and he was willing to visit China to restore peace. On February 21, 1972 Nixon went to China to make a long lasting relationship with the
The reason for this was failing military strategies and protests by the American people.. One of the tactics he formulated was Vietnamization. On November 3, 1969 Vietnamization was televised nationally after negotiation between Nixon, his advisors, and the Secretary of Defense, Melvin Laird. As the History.com Staff explained it “[Vietnamization was] a gradual, phased withdrawal of American combat forces, combined with an expanded effort to train and equip South Vietnam to take over military responsibility for its own defense.” (1).
Negations with Hanoi took place in Paris, where it resulted in a partial halting of the bombings. When Nixon took the presidential seat, he decided to pursue the same line of action his predecessor had taken. He immediately declared that he would be the one to put a stop to the Vietnam War for good. But his proclamations were only made for the sole purpose of gaining political power and stardom. Another trait that they both shared in dealing with foreign policies was the habit of lying and hiding information from the masses.
Richard Nixon believed so highly in this plan of vietnamization that he was willing to give up his presidency for it. Hopefully for Nixon, “An Loc was the first chance to test it in a major battle. To the surprise of both sides, Vietnamization worked” (Fleming 1). Everyone was surprised when the south vietnamese army started to fight back without the help of the United states. The republic of South Vietnamese began to fight the North and won without america’s help.
In 1955, the United States entered the Vietnam War, a war that would last twenty years. This war had proved to be one of the deadliest wars of the time. During this time, it brought a great divide throughout the country. People felt as though the war was unnecessary and the government was sacrificing innocent lives. There were riots and peaceful protests throughout the country because many people wanted to war to end and were beginning to stand up for their rights.
The Vietnam War has been a subject of much debate throughout the years, whether or not the United States should have gotten involved, and if the United States won the part of the war they were involved with. The Americans were involved in the Cold War, against the Communist regime. So, it was not a big surprise that the United States got involved in Vietnam, trying to stop North Communist Vietnam from overtaking by force South Vietnam. After the Vietnamese fired torpedoes at an American ship on August 2, 1964, in the Gulf of Tonkin, President Lyndon Johnson had Congress declare that the United States could use military force against Vietnam. However, Congress never officially declared war against Vietnam so the American presence was not sanctioned.
One huge thing that the Vietnam War helped create the heated political parties of our time. At the start of the Vietnam War, two groups of student societies began to form. One was the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). They were formed in the house of staunch conservative, William F. Buckley
Nixon tried exploring every private avenue to end the war in Vietnam and he sent personal letters to Ho Chi Ming through an individual who knew him well. Even still, the North Vietnamese made their position final. North Vietnam’s leader Ho Chi Ming “demanded our unconditional acceptance of their terms, which are that we withdraw all American forces immediately and unconditionally and that [American Troops] overthrow the Government of South Vietnam as they leave.” Exhausted and worn down because of North Vietnams unwillingness to negotiate Nixon became convinced that a major change was needed to break the deadlock in
Vietnam War: The U.S. Didn’t Lose to the Viet Cong Sullivan Watson August 5, 1964. The U.S. sprung into battle after an alleged attack from North Vietnam. The following war was a long 20-year conflict between South Vietnam and Communist North Vietnam. Both sides were eventually supported by world superpowers, caught at the same time in their own Cold War. The U.S. backed the South, and the Soviet Union defended the North.
The war was a very costly fight and in the 60s, we had almost 500,000 men in Vietnam at the time (history.com). The war began when America thought that communism was spreading throughout Asia. The cold war was going on, and America did not want to take any chance of communism spreading. The war was not only was the longest fought by America, but it also gave a glimpse to the American people. It was the first war ever where they had footage of the battlefield and the war was often documented on television.
The Vietnam War was strictly between North and South Vietnam. Many people say that we had no business in getting involved. Furthermore, the Americans were lied to by their own government. Who would trust a government that as been lying to them the time? Especially in a time of war.
The Vietnam war was preceded by a very turbulent time in our history with problems here in the states such as racism, women’s rights, and a president being shot. But in Vietnam they were going through a civil war, which they had done before, but not to this extent, this time they got the U.S.S.R. involved. It was communist Russia and North Vietnam against South Vietnam. The U.S. started to get
What options were available to President Johnson? To President Nixon? What were the advantages and disadvantages? When Johnson took the presidency he could have stopped support to South Vietnam, but he didn’t.
