Civil Rights and Black Liberation movement inspired artists such as Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder to express social commentary in their music. Stevie Wonder expresses social issues in all of his songs but, the two songs I am going to talk about are “Big Brother” (1972) and “Village Ghetto Land” (1976). In his song “Big Brother” accuse the government of spying and killing African American leaders. “Village Ghetto Land” invites the politicians to see the inner city of families suffering from starvation. Both songs reveal the hardships that African Americans face as a result of deception, abuse, and neglect by government. The song “Big Brother” came from author George Orwell “Nineteen Eighty Four” (1949) fictional totalitarian state of indicating their will be totalitarianism in the near future. George Orwell novel indicate the readers in 1949 about a possibility of the government intruding citizens privacy. “Big Brother” deeply expresses the cruelty the citizen’s face in the poor inner city struggling for hopelessness. The story states that to achieve mental and physical equality among all Americans, the government in the story tortures its citizens, which makes the situation not so ideal. It states that ‘the most beautiful people must wear hideous masks….the most graceful and strong must wear weights…he most intelligent beings must listen to earsplitting noises.’ These sentences inform the reader about how this dystopian world works, and how it is not a fun society to live in. In addition to this, the author writes about how the government system has affected one of the main characters. This impacts the story as the reader is constantly reminded of the negatives about this dystopian world.
On page 242, the book states,”The picture had fallen to the floor, uncovering the telescreen behind it(Orwell).” This shows that Big Brother wanted to ensure that no one was thinking of rebelling or committing crimes. The 1960s was a tumultuous decade for the United States. Along with the escalation of the Vietnam War, this decade was rocked by the Civil Rights movement and the second wave of the Feminist movements, creating an immense amount of social tension. As a result, people turned to politically-charged music, predominantly Rock n’ Roll, to release their frustrations. However, an equally important musical genre, Soul, was left in the background. Despite the fact that Soul music was not as popular in the United States, artists such as Aretha Franklin released many politically-charged songs that advocated for social justice.

These strict laws in the society made the main characters lose their individuality and freedom. Individuality is lost due to the meaningless laws and lack of education. One of the laws is “for writing this or even reading this is 3 years in prison” (Rand ch.1, page 14). This is saying that the people in the society all have to be equal. No one is stronger than anyone else, smarter than anyone else, or better than anyone else.
Believe it or not, many of Sam’s most avid fans were white people, and Sam was afraid that if he wrote a protest song, he would lose those followers. In the end, Sam wanted to use his fame as a tool to change the world around him.
