Shakespeare’s plays have had countless renditions, the fact that the plays were written so long ago means the characters performances can change depending on how they want the characters to be portrayed.
In Kurzel’s 2015 Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, played by Marion Cotillard tries to protect herself and Macbeth by hiding their murderous conspiracies and her husband’s declining mental state from the Lords through her volume, tone, and facial expressions, which illustrates her manipulative personality and desperation to keep her power.
One of the ways that Kurzel made Lady Macbeth show some of her true character in the banquet scene was through Cotillard’s strict control of her volume and tone. The tension in the Banquet scene is palpable, simply

Macbeth is clearly not in the right frame of mind, the audience has already seen that he can be violent and domineering. Compared to Lady Macbeth he is a much more imposing figure, he could easily best Lady Macbeth in anything physically and she knows this. The way she speaks to Macbeth when he is holding her in the middle of the hall is the way a mother would speak to a child having a tantrum. She speaks to him in a calm but forceful way, making sure that he knows he is causing a scene and that he needs to stop. Momentarily, this calms him but he quickly reverts to his old self. She speaks so quietly so that the other people in the hall will not hear her but that Macbeth will understand her well. This particular part in the banquet scene makes her seem more human because the audience can see one of her shortcomings; she is not a man. She will always be less powerful and than a man and will likely never be taken as seriously as one. Even though she is clearly the more intelligent and better leader. She is able to keep all of her plots from coming to light even with a drunken and hallucinating Macbeth. She prevents any of the Lord's questions from being answered and prevents Macbeth from revealing anything crucial or
Although this may have come as a surprise because throughout the play she was the level headed one who was pushing Macbeth to kill and was covering up for him. She even manipulates him into killing Duncan saying he isn’t a man, “When you durst do it,” she
Upon learning of the witches’ prophecies, the woman devised a plan which included Macbeth murdering Duncan to take his title (I, iv, 38-40). This scene demonstrates Lady Macbeth’s obvious malicious intent and her malevolent personality. After noticing her husband’s reluctance at executing her plan, she influences him so that Macbeth will conclusively murder Duncan. “ …Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem” (I, vii, 42-3). She continually criticizes him for refusing to kill Duncan, letting him know that what he was doing was considered a cowardly act.
She does this through the articulation of situations that make Macbeth feel less than Lady Macbeth because said she would kill if she promised to do so and Macbeth is stating that he is questioning killing Duncan after saying he would. Although Lady Macbeth never carried out any murders, it is enough to convince Macbeth that he is strong enough to do so because if a woman could hypothetically carry out of murder then a man could definitely do it. Lady
It all starts off with her wanting to take order of what her husband needs to achieve. She claims to want to take her weakness away while being a woman as she speaks on the murder of Duncan. “Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty!” Lady Macbeth is bold and fierce in what she takes authority over. Macbeth follows along Lady Macbeths plan when declaring the murder of Duncan.
Throughout the scene, Macbeth is subjected to mockery, guilt-tripping, and dishonor for hesitating to kill the king. She brilliantly structures her arguments to focus on her husband, portraying her cause to be in his best interest. This succeeds, for Lady Macbeth knows her husband is an egocentric and, in his eyes, a valiant man. In the end, Macbeth decides to go through with the plan, but becomes more passionate about it than before. Lady Macbeth manipulated him into solidly committing to it.
Darkness can be seen in many literary works with the intention of showing a turn for the worse in many characters lives. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare displays examples of violence in order to show audience members how Macbeth’s desire for kingship, led to his demise through his guilt. The use of blood, nature and supernatural elements are used as a way of symbolizing Shakespeare's theme of Macbeth’s guilt. Is one man’s desire for nobility worth the cost of others lives? Blood alters the atmosphere throughout Macbeth through the effect it has on the main character.
When Lady Macbeth found out about the predictions the witches had for Macbeth, she started to pressure him, even guilt tripped him about their deceased son, and made him doubt the morals he valued. As act I of Macbeth, carried on, the image and principles Macbeth had for himself began to rot away. While Macbeth desired take King Duncan’s throne, he wanted to do it the in righteous matter. Whenever Macbeth had doubts about killing King Duncan, Lady Macbeth was always there to urge him otherwise, because she cared more about power than him "Great Glamis, worthy Cawdor." (1.5 52).
Her ambition and passion to get to power would make the Jacobean audience disapprove since Lady Macbeth is going against women’s stereotypes where they’re seen as weak and frail and what Lady Macbeth is doing is very uncommon. Her being alone on stage also shows how she doesn’t need Macbeth to help her or guide her, which again goes against women’s stereotypes since they had to be obedient and under a man’s protection. Having just killed Duncan- who wasn’t just king of Scotland but was a good man; Macbeth is unsurprisingly feeling guilty and is profoundly remorseful, as he has a clear conscious, when he goes back to his wife. Phrases like “I have done the deed.
As Lady Macbeth continues to hide her “weak” attributes by displaying a stronger shell, she also reveals her sense of ambition. Although Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both seek power, it is obvious that power is what drives Lady Macbeth. From the second she knew about the witches’ prophecies, she made it her goal to become King and Queen. When she creates a plan to murder King Duncan, Macbeth shows he is nervous, Lady Macbeth finds this problematic and asks him to “project a peaceful mood, because if you look troubled, you will arouse suspicion.” (1.5.63-65).
Thesis: In Macbeth, Shakespeare’s juxtaposition of his characters’ “deepest desires” with their “false face[s]” furthers the motif of deception and treachery, setting the stage for Macbeth’s ultimate regicide. When the audience sees Lady Macbeth act like a traditional hostess despite her murderous desires, her treachery becomes amplified. Before Duncan arrives, Lady Macbeth is seen on stage planning to influence her husband, who is “too full [of the] milk of human kindness,” to change his nature and murder his cousin and king, Duncan (1.5.17).
35-42). She is asking the spirits to make her more manly, so she can perform the deed that she wants Macbeth to do. She is asking the spirits to make her not feel guilty for murdering someone so that Macbeth can be king, and she won’t feel bad about it. For example, she shows greed when she finds out about the prophecy. When Macbeth sends her the letter explaining what happened, she decides right away that she is going to be queen, and he will be king.
Like men, she has the trait to be gruesome and diabolical in nature. She has determined for herself the course to be pursued and nothing can hinder her. She does not need the prophecy of the witches to urge her. She is aware of her strength and she is resolute in her aim. Knowing Macbeth’s weakness,
As soon as she heard Macbeth’s prophecy, she was willing to do anything to get him into the position of king. She was even willing to aid in the murder of innocent people who stood in the way of Macbeth’s ascension to the crown like, King Duncan. Her greed led to Macbeth’s downfall. When Macbeth stated that he was questioning his intentions to kill the king, she pushed him and assisted in the plotting. “We will proceed no further in this business. /
She insults him and calls him a coward while also questioning his manhood which makes Macbeth come to a realization that not killing the king is the way of a coward and he is motivated to carry out the plan and murder the king because of Lady Macbeth’s insults and speech that she gives him. By successfully persuading Macbeth into murdering the king this shows that Lady Macbeth is controlling towards people and she can be a very manipulative person. It shows that she is the type of person that gets things done by manipulating other people to do her dirty work for her. Lady Macbeth can simply achieve her own goals by getting into anyone’s head and turning their own conscience against them in, which is essentially what she did to her husband. Macbeth would have never went through with killing King Duncan if Lady Macbeth had never persuaded him because he really does have a soft heart and is good and honorable.
Lady Macbeth felt a deep sense of fierceness and strength when she was able to recognize that power was within reach. She uses a demanding, aggressive tone towards Macbeth in which she does not give him the option to fail. Due to her intent on becoming royalty, she pushes and makes sure that anything and everything is done to achieve such powers: even if it can have immense consequences. After seeing how becoming royalty has played out, Lady Macbeth takes a step back. Lady Macbeth tries to understand what has been done and make sense of what she can do.
