The birth of video and arcade games in the late 1940’s created the first virtual source of entertainment other than television. Born is the phenomenon that fascinates most American teenagers. With games such as King Kong, Pong, and Pac Man, society encountered a trend that would progress and install itself in the daily lives of people for the next 60 years. The continued advancement of technology led to a Pac Man arcade game, then a digital gameboy, to the Xbox and PlayStation that appear in most American homes today. Grand Theft Auto. Thrill Kill. Gears Of War. The list goes on and on. Video games that contain graphic content familiarize the youth with violence and hostility. According to CNN, 85% of available video games possess a form of violence or crime. These games promote belligerence virtually as well as in reality. Kids idolize superheroes or violent figures within the games and aspire to be more like them. Subtly desiring to possess characteristics such as strength, speed, or a special “power” leads to an unhealthy aspiration to be more like the brutal characters depicted in video games. Many games include real information about guns and ammunition; familiarizing teens on how to operate weapons. Many researchers strongly believe there is a direct link between use of violent video games and increases in hostile behavior as well as decreases in “prosocial behavior, empathy, and moral engagement” (CNN News). Many of the games teens engage in use human or other living targets, teaching children to feel pleasure and success after inflicting pain on one another. Continued exposure to killing or maiming living targets creates insensitivity towards pain and violence, leading to aggression and violence in teens in their daily lives. Humans learn using the common psychology behavior of imprinting. They see and they do.
