Does virtual violence lead to actual violence? As we all know at this age of sophisticated technology and information, children are more exposed to video gaming compared to the past decades. As a result, video gaming industry has gained tremendous growth since coming into the market in the 1980s. This is because of the increased number of its consumers, especially children and teenagers. This is because at a tender age a child is not able to dissociate himself or herself from virtual things such as video games. Violent video games, being aggressive in their content, children are at risk of copying acts from these games involuntarily, leading to some serious long-term challenges. For instance, a child who is more exposed to violent games is often rebellious to parents and teachers, and in most cases tends to resort to violent behaviour whenever they are agitated. Playing video games is a favorite activity of kids and most of kids today often spend more time playing video games. Yet its effects on their health are often perceived to be negative. There has been an ongoing debate on whether or not there is a relationship between violent video games and engaging in violent acts. The majority of best-selling games involve frequent acts of violence as the central gameplay theme such as; Call of Duty, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Battlefield. In today 's media, we see acts of violence everywhere. I have personally seen people blame violent video games for recent school shootings that have occurred. One of the biggest question in our society at the moment is, do violent video games have a long-term effect on people, or are there other contributing factors that lead to such violence?
Violent video games are not harmful to people because they do not provoke violence, they can benefit people in certain aspects hard to help otherwise, and they can actually calm the user. For example, one reason why video games are not bad for people is because contrary to popular belief, they actually help with calming the user and relieving some of their stress. “A 2012 study at Texas A&M...showed that both men and women who play violent video games long-term seem to be able to adopt mental skills to handle stress” (Dube para. 8).This makes clear that the statements of violent video games being portrayed as causing violence and aggression are, simply put, wrong.
