Vocabulary is one of the main components of foreign language learning. Different definitions have been proposed for vocabulary. McCarthy (1990) defined vocabulary as “words in specific language or freestanding items of language that have meaning” (p. 17). Vocabulary knowledge is important because it encompasses all the words we must know to access our background knowledge, express our ideas and communicate effectively, and learn about new concepts. Students’ word knowledge linked strongly to academic success because students who have large vocabularies can understand new ideas and concepts more quickly than students with limited vocabularies. Regarding the importance of vocabulary in communication, Rubin and Thompson (1994) maintain that one cannot speak, understand, read or write a foreign language without knowing a lot of words. When learners possess a good command of words, they know how to utilize them appropriately in a foreign language. Della and Hocking (1992) emphasize the importance of vocabulary in communication, stating that it needs a good knowledge of vocabulary to understand and convey their meaning but just a little grammar. Also, good knowledge of vocabulary provides learners with enough confidence and success in communication. It has been suggested that teaching vocabulary should not only consist of teaching specific words but also aim at equipping learners with strategies necessary to expand their vocabulary knowledge (Nunan, 2010; Willis, 2012). Therefore, as its objectives, this study aims at finding the washback effects of task-based assessment on the Iranian EFL learners ' vocabulary development; hence, investigated whether applying task-based assessment techniques leads to a significant improvement in their vocabulary development.
1.4. Research Questions
In line with the objectives of the research, the present study will be an attempt to find answers to the following questions:
RQ1. Is there any significant difference between the traditional assessment and TBLA concerning their washback effect on EFL Iranian learners’ vocabulary development?
RQ2. Is there any significant deference between male and female EFL Iranian learners in terms of TBLI effect on their vocabulary
