Skaggs, who bought a grocery store from his father. By 1926, Skaggs had become very successful with his stores and merged with Safeway to become Safeway, Inc. In January 2015, AB Acquisition LLC (parent company of Albertson’s) merged with Safeway to create one of the largest food and drug retailers in the country – over 2,200 stores in 33 states, specifically with Safeway stores in 19 states (Safeway Inc., 2008-2016). During that time, the food for the food venues would be delivered by truck to the venue from a company called Alex Foods. The company was established by Alex Morales, a Sonoran immigrant who took his small business of selling tamales from a wagon and turned it into a multi-million dollar empire. Casa de Fritos would receive routine deliveries of tortillas and taco shells from Alex Foods to use for their restaurant.
The love canal was named after William T. Love, an entrepreneur who in 1892 proposed digging a six to seven-mile-long canal to connect the upper and lower Niagara River. The proposal was originally inspired by the idea of creating a utopic urban neighborhood with hydroelectric energy generation nearby. However, due to economic factors the project was discarded leaving behind an unfinished canal. In 1920, the land was sold to be used as a municipal and chemical disposal site. Intensive chemical dumping estimated at 40 million pounds of chemicals took place between the years 1942 to 1953.
