Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819. He is considered to be one of America’s most important poets. He is one of eight children of Walter Whitman and Louisa Van Velsor Whitman. Walt lived in Brooklyn and Long Island in the 1820’s-1830’s. When Walt was eleven his father took him out of school to help support the family.
He had four other siblings. They later moved to Marceline, Missouri in 1906. Walt at the age of only nine years old, had to get up at 3:30 am every day a week to fold and deliver newspaper for two hours. After delivering newspapers, he would go to grammar school. Even with all the responsibilities, Walt did not let it keep him from pursuing his dreams of drawing and doing art.
He grew up in a small town called Marceline, Missouri, and even as a small child, Walt loved art, and that love only became stronger. As he grew up, he fought his way to success. Finally, after many hardships and struggles, he became the success story that we all know him as today, by creating the first ever full-length animated film, and changing the film industry all together. Walt didn’t stop there, he kept dreaming, and soon imagined a park where all of his creations could come to life, which we now know as Disneyland. Walt was not just an innovator, he challenged the way people viewed childhood.

It was in this small town that he was encouraged to pursue his interest in drawing from his aunt and his neighbor. But due to his family’s poverty his father had to sell the farm and relocated the family to Kansas City (Nix). Due to several circumstances Walt’s father sold his newspaper route in Kansas and moved to Chicago to work in a jelly and fruit juice company. It is here that Walt dropped out of high school at age 16 because he drew constantly and did not pay attention in class.
