Walt Whitman's Attitudes Toward America

After reading various poems about our nation, many can conclude that different people have different opinions and views on America. When people hear the word “America” some feel upset or gloomy. Some may feel warm or cheery inside. Some may feel indifferent or confused. There are a million and one ways that people express their emotions towards the land of the free and the brave.

The purpose of Whitman’s poem is to celebrate workers and success. This poem also has a patriotic tone because of the author’s love to the country. “Let America be America Again” has a rhyming style. Hughes’ poem was created in the mid 1900s during the time of the civil rights movement. He writes about how he is feeling left out of the American Dream.

Since McKay describes his country as a person rather than a thing, it makes the poem more emotional which adds to the severity of his hardships. Even though it seems as if McKay’s relationship with America is toxic, he also experiences joy through her. McKay describes a glimpse of hope when he writes, “Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood” (7). The promises of America and her greatness seem to provide the poet with a sense of fascination. He is entangled by her grandeur even when she wrongs him.

Nationalism is when people have pride for their country and put its needs before their own for the betterment of that nation. When citizens of a nation see their nation’s flag or hear their nation’s anthem, a sense of overflowing pride and admiration is evoked. This is one of the key topics in Persepolis as Marjane and her family are “overwhelmed” by the playing of their national anthem. Iran was dealing with a corrupt, unstable, yet powerful, government and nationalism is what caused citizens to feel so patriotic as to stand up for their country, as was encouraged by Iran’s anthem being played. Marjane effectively used images to show her nationalism and the result of that pride.

Loyalty is a common literary theme because it is something that all people seek. Military companies, sports teams, and employers actively seek those they feel will be the most loyal to their cause. Loyalty provides a sense of stability and comfort. In many great literary works we see that the most loyal characters are those of meager existence. In the short stories “A White Heron,” “The Death of Ivan Ilych,” and “A Rose for Emily” a theme of undervalued loyalty becomes evident.

In the two poems, “I Hear America Singing,” and, “I, Too,” there are many similarities and differences that show us that know matter what is happening you have to stand up for yourself and do what you love. We see this in the two poems, “I Hear America Singing,” and, “I, Too” when the authors, Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes, both talk about what America was a like in the 1900s, and how people were doing jobs that they had liked to do. We can see how a African American man would stand up for himself and we see this in the poem “I, Too” because we are able to see how he was able to stand up to everyone else and prove he was able to be treated like anyone else.

Through the use of antonomasia, descriptors of occupations characterize the people in the poem. The speaker witnesses “[t]he boatman singing” (Whitman 7), as well as “the deckhand singing” (Whitman 8). These titles solidify each person’s place in the unified class to which they belong, but also supply them with individuality. The thematic use of opposites explores the beauty of unity when segmented, presenting a display of synecdoche in which the individual workers unify to make up America itself. Aside from the speaker, each person “[sings] what belongs to him or her and to none else” (Whitman 15).

Throughout the course of history, African American people have made tremendous sacrifices to obtain equality and overall success as members of society. Many of these individuals have documented their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through various forms of art and writing. One particularly striking example of this, is a poem written by Maya Angelou titled “Still I Rise”. “Still I Rise” is a poem filled with strength and confidence, revealing Angelou’s character and positive outlook on life despite her previous grievances. Within the poem, Angelou is seemingly speaking to those who do not wish her success and prosperity.

He was a singer and actor and loved to write music and sing too others, he loved his fans. In one of his songs that are connected to ‘’ The Minister’s Black Veil’’ is related somewhat to. It would talk about their symbols and their differences. It would also talk about love and how it dies and ended. They both had some connections and similarities on that song Johnny Cash wrote.

I have driven by the Makawao Veterans Cemetery but have never stop and paid my respects. I respect those like your friend’s grandfather and your own grandfather for serving their country in order for us to have our own freedom. I thought it was so sweet that your friend’s grandmother shared stories about the love she had for her husband. There is something I like about how the military cemeteries are mad and organize. As an American I feel that ALL things are possible if you Believe , And for that I Believe that America is not just MY home, but OURS Veterans, Veterans are the men and women who have fought and served in the army in order to honor and protect our country. As these individuals boldly practiced their beliefs in freedom, they inadvertently rewrote history, and we as Americans, honor these patriots who were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans Day is the day that we set aside to honor those who served our country. Propaganda’s were popular during 1941-1945 because it helped unified the public behind the effort of the war to make other people help. Soon women began to help build war materials and resources that could help win the war or help rebuild after the war. There was never victory for the Axis because of all the support from men, “Women power” and children. A lot of posters that were put up helped encourage the americans and gave them spirit.
