Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones are two, extremely different characters. Both of the characters’ names represented them well; Ichabod Crane was tall and lanky, while Brom Bones was muscular and strong. Ichabod was an educated being and also apprehensive. Unlike Bones who was arrogant, upfront, and more street-smart than book-smart. A few things that contrasted between the actions of both of them is that Ichabod didn’t know how to ride a horse very well, he taught music, was a school teacher, he helped people all around the town with their farms, and had to work hard for his goals.
These books reveal that timing is everything when it comes to the challenges and opportunities of ordinary people. Neither of these men were born into a privileged lifestyle and neither of these men stood out of the ordinary. Hewes was a shoemaker and Douglass was a slave- both holding a low social status during their time. What made them special is that they rose above their less than fair conditions and made something of themselves.

“I Hear America Singing” has a free verse style. This poem was created in the mid 1800s , during a rise in immigrants and the Industrial Revolution. Social Group: Fathers During this time period, fathers were the “breadwinners” and expected to work and provide for their families. However, black fathers in the 1950’s particular had to work long hours because the only jobs available to them were often low paying. This directly correlates with African-American’s low place on the social ladder during this pre-Civil Rights era. It was also extremely difficult for African-American women to find work during this time, placing the financial buren solely on the father.
Everyone in the poem from the mechanics, the masons, the boatmen, the shoemakers and workers of both genders. These Americans at work are “singing” what belongs to him or her and to none else, the songs are coming from them, things or some things they own. Also, the poem is much happier than the “I too” poem because it is not talking about racism, and is generally talking about their nation and about America as a whole. At night time the singing becomes more of a group activity as it unites a group of contrasting Americans saying that they know how to sing a strong melodious song. Following after is “The List”, as a majority of the lines start with a sort of worker, the shoemaker, and the woodcutter.
Some of the comparisons brought about in these writings were that both groups were oppressed, controlled and unheard. African Americans worked for low wages and housewives worked for no wages at all. The skills of the African American were not available to help the common good since they were often times stuck in menial jobs or never given the chance because of their skin color. Housewives didn’t get a chance to help the common good because they were taking care of the household, children and a husband. Both groups would like to have been recognized and treated as an equal, but they were unheard voices in a world all too busy to listen.

There are plenty of women that are working full time jobs from six o 'clock in the morning to nine o 'clock at night and they could be doing the exact same job as men.
