Dr. Naismith invented basketball in the year of 1891. “Naismith first took a soccer ball and a peach basket to the gym and invented basketball. In 1893, James Naismith replaced the peach basket with iron hoops and a hammock-style basket. Ten years later came the open-ended nets of today. Naismith was asked by the director of physical education, Dr. Luther Gulick to invent a new game that athletes could play during the winter to keep the track and field athletes in shape during the winter (Hiskey). Naismith was given two weeks to come up with such a game that revolutionized the whole sports world. Basketball was inspired by a game he played as a child called “Duck on a Rock” (Hiskey). When the first game of basketball was played, Naismith was able to use a soccer ball and a basket for the game. The whole purpose of the game was to get the ball in the basket which was nailed on the wall
