Harriet Tubman is a larger than life icon and an American hero. Harriet was born into a family of eleven children who were born into slavery. Benjamin Ross and Harriet Greene were her parents, and lived on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet was put to work by the age of five, and served as a maid and children’s nurse. At the age of six Araminta was taken from her parents to live with James Cook, whose wife was a weaver, to learn the skills of weaving. James Cook would order her to guard his muskrat traps, which compelled her to walk through the water. At the age of 12 she became a field hand. Because Harriet Tubman wanted freedom, she fought constantly to achieve it. Harriet went from slave to inspiration in a matter of years.

Harriet Tubman was one of many slaves who escaped after her master died in 1849, but rather than fleeing the South, she stayed to help save hundreds of slaves. In one day Harriet Tubman rescued around 800 slaves, nursed people during the civil war, made several high-risk trips to Maryland to rescue family and friends, and throughout her entire life (especially the end) she took care of the poor. Araminta Ross also known as Harriet Tubman changed her name to Harriet, after her mother and adopted her last name from her husband. She got married to John Tubman when she was about 24 years old. John was a free black man.

Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. The fact that she knew the land of the south very well was extremely helpful for the runaway slaves when escaping through the Underground Railroad (Maschi). According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.

Harriet Tubman was an extraordinary heroine. She was brave herself in saving many lives, including her parents. She was a heroic person doing heroic actions; saving people when her life depended on it. At one point, since Harriet was saving so many people, she was worth around $40,000. Yet Harriet was not taught math and science, in fact, she was an illiterate person, but she was smarter than the slave overseers and the masters. Harriet was a heroine; hero, for being such a kind, translucent person. Harriet knew her weaknesses and her strengths, but her strengths hid her weaknesses in the shadows. Both Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad played a huge role in causing the Civil War. They both helped slaves escape the torture that they had to face every day, and were able to give them the lives that they deserved. Many enslaved people’s lives were changed due to the generosity and courage of Harriet Tubman and anyone else who worked on the Underground Railroad. These people risked their freedom everyday helping these slaves whom they did not even know, all because they knew that what they had to face was inhumane. The world was forever changed by the efforts that Harriet Tubman and everyone else put into the Underground Railroad, and we will always recognize the sacrifice that they had to make.

How much work does it take for someone to stand up for human rights? How brave do they have to be to do it? Three individuals were strong and took that stand. Harriet Tubman helped many slaves escape to freedom, Patrisse Cullors helped stand up for black human rights, and Cesar Chavez got better conditions for people working in farm labor. They all stood up for human rights in a non-violent way because they were experiencing what was happening and were brave enough to do so.
