Why Imperialism Was Not Justified Many Americans and Europeans believe that there was many good reasons for imperialism. These people think this because they were the ones that benefited from it. In imperialism, the stronger countries took over the weaker countries and used them for their resources which improved their economy. Most also claim that they helped the countries they were imperializing, but the Europeans were actually hurting them. This led to the natives rebelling which arguably led to World War 1 later on. Imperialism was not justified for multiple reasons because imperialism did improve the lives of many natives and increased global trade, but the majority of the world ended up hurting from it. It hurt their economy and many Africans suffered greatly. Imperialism also created a new racist system called Apartheid, which lasted for about 50 years. In the article, South Africa - The Story of Gold and Diamonds, it states, “In 1950, the Population Registration Act further divided the citizens of the country into “white” and “nonwhite” categories...The 1953 Education Act forced Africans out of white mission school and into state-run schools, where students were taught the significance of the ethnic differences separating the nonwhite communities. Other laws sought to limit contact between white and nonwhite communities by reserving employment for white workers and making provisions for separate public facilities for the different races” (Zrenda). The British were very racist and affected the belief system of the African people in very negative ways for a very long time. In addition, the Apartheid caused rebellious behavior. Especially in March of 1960, which was when a terrible massacre occurred, In the same article the author writes, “The Pan-Africanist Congress (PAC) conducted a nonviolent demonstration during which hundreds of people presented themselves to the police in Sharpeville. When demonstrators began stoning police vehicles, however, the police panicked and opened fire on the crowd with automatic weapons, killing 69 people (including 45 women and children) and wounding 186. It caused the Opium War, World War 1, and created many racist and unreasonable laws. The British were very self-centered and imperialized countries only to gain territories and resources from them. I think that imperialism was not justified for multiple reasons because although imperialism did improve the lives of many natives and increased global trade, the majority of the world ended up hurting from it. The negatives outway the positives because of the exploitation of the natives which caused many unnecessary events to
Although some people believe that imperialism brought education and school to help the world, it is actually true that imperialism was not beneficial for the world because Europeans changed the culture of natives and brought many deaths to the human population. Imperialism benefit the world by bringing schools to improve education. “Many people in the industrialized nations
The social reaction to expansionism continued throughout both movements because the opposing sides of each argument disagreed on completely different topics. Many during the time of Imperialism believed America was destined to expand due to the believed superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race (Doc 1), and was justified in expanding due to the fact that America would spread democracy and that they were required to expand because it was the “White Man’s Burden” (Doc 1-POV). This is also true for Manifest Destiny, which was built on the idea that God ordained the western hemisphere for Americans.
The Europeans also brought slavery to the world which everybody knows is a terrible thing. A large reason why Imperialism was a terrible thing was because the spread of disease. Spreading of these diseases, for example Smallpox, killed millions of people around the world. Smallpox destroyed the native tribes the Aztecs and the Incas.
Those three reasons being, economy, military, and culture superiority. One reason that America saw to imperialize was their economy, with all of this newly achieved land there were many new ways to improve their economy. A big reason imperialism helped America’s economy was all of the resources other nations had to offer. For example, Hawaii had sandalwood. Sandalwood had a lot of value in China, according to History.com.
Because the European leaders held the berlin conference without any African leaders, the borders of the colonies stirred up many African civilizations. Many different ethnic, religiously and culturally diverse merged together. Along with these disputes there were much larger disputes with the European countries, which had white men coming and saying the land was theirs. The people wee confused but then forced to do manual labor and do anything they were told. They were told to mine minerals from the earth so the Europeans could make money.
Imperialism was beneficial because it allowed nations to become unified, built a stronger military, along with cultural superiority. Like anything else, imperialism had its positives, but it also has its negatives. Imperialism unified nations and built a
Imperialism is not needed in our modern world. United states should not dictate their values. We don’t take care of children seriously. We do things with military force. We don’t respect other and we keep creating enemies.
Imperialism has been a concept since the beginnning of time, but during the late 1800s it really began to kick off. More and more countries predominantly European were realizing how imperialism could and would benefit them. They wanted power, resources, established culture and more. Through imperialism many countries realized they were able to achieve those desires. The scramble for Africa was an era when Europeans were trying to conquer land for personal benefits that began in 1876.
Obviously, no one is never going to freely allow others to take over their nation. So, imperialism was mostly done using force. One area that was deeply affected by imperialism was Africa. While the positive effects of imperialism in Africa were Africa at the end was freed from European control and Africans were able to govern themselves & in Europe they access raw material and vase amount of land; the negative effects of imperialism in Africa caused great damage to human rights, social division, murder and raped of Africans and spread of racism throughout the continent; for Europe, the
In the late nineteenth and century, many Americans agree with the view of imperialism, but in the early twentieth century America disagreed with the overseas expansion because they believed it went against the whole U.S. believe in freedom and self-rule. Many Americans believed it was the U.S. burden to teach undeveloped countries into civilization; therefore, the U.S. helped Cuba and the Philippines after the and during Spanish-American War. As Time progressed, Americans did not want to get involved in any other war. As a result, the U.S.passed the Espionage Act of 1917 to avoid entering future warfare.
Imperialism took place in Great Britain in the late 1800’s. After a short while it began to gradually spread throughout Europe and this was a very important factor of the colonization of Africa. Many Europeans thought that Imperialism was the discovery of a lifetime and that it was for the good of Africa but the outcomes were the opposite of what they thought, European Imperialism
Anti imperialists had the better arguments than imperialists. Imperialism violates the peoples rights to vote/ the declaration of independence. White business leaders forced king kalakaua to amend Hawaii's constitution limiting voting rights to only wealthy land owners. Congress also proclaimed Hawaii as an american territory, although Hawaiians never had the chance to vote. Imperialism goes against ideals of self government for an example the military controlled Puerto Rico until congress decided otherwise.
By restricting people’s right to create their own government, protect and use their property, and freedom in general. This hypocritical side of imperialism makes us wonder if we are who we tell ourselves we are. It makes us wonder if we are the true heroes of the world, or just another greedy nation. Although these arguments are strong and convincing, the positives effects of imperialism are stronger and more convincing than the negatives as a nation can go from having no world power to the top of the list by applying imperialism
Britain had some success and some failures with their Imperial policies in the 19 th century. Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries. Some would say they didn’t have any successes at all. This is not true.
The british also built the cape town, this was good because it was between England and india. There was more cons than pros, because more the 75% or the population was enslaved, there was so many different languages, and the boers and England still had beef between them. Over all africa was more advanced, they gained more medical care, railroads and education. Yet that still didn't do much for the africans because they were all enslaved, families split apart and given different names. With everyone coming to africa it sparked the interest of kings who wanted the land.
