With the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs just a day away, matchups on both sides of the league are officially set. Last week, we took a look at what the Western Conference may bring. This week, let's preview the Eastern Conference.
The Washington Capitals are the President's Trophy winners (again), meaning they notched the most points out of any team in the league and will hold home-ice advantage through the duration of their playoff run. They will face off against the upstart Toronto Maple Leafs, who have made a complete 180 since finishing in last place in 2016.
Their prize from the 2016 draft lottery, Auston Matthews, is a major reason for the Leafs' turnaround. Matthews scored 40 goals this year and finished with 69 total points. Though he was the capstone of an incredibly strong draft class, I will be astounded if he does not win the Calder Trophy for the best rookie later this year.
However, Matthews was not

Lastly, the Boston Bruins will play the Ottawa Senators. However, Boston will be without two of its key defensemen for at least the beginning of the round: Torey Krug and Brandon Carlo were injured in the last few games of the regular season and have not yet returned to the ice.
On the other hand, they will have rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy to give them a boost. Boston draftee McAvoy just joined the organization days ago after Boston University was knocked out of its postseason run, and spent a few games with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League.
With Carlo and Krug both out, the big club decided to burn a year of McAvoy's entry-level contract and get him some ice time now. Though it's baptism by fire, McAvoy is more than up to the
The Veteran Oduya joins fellow Swede Erik Karlsson and a returning cast of Dion Phaneuf, Cody Ceci, Mark Borowiecki, Chris Wideman and Fredrick Claesson giving Ottawa seven defensemen with NHL experience, all seven defensemen need to clear through waivers per Cap Friendly. This could very well be the group the Senators go with out of Training
For the first time in his career, Brassard has been given the number one job and has done remarkably well behind a much younger and far less potent offense this year. The team traded the face of the franchise, Timo Meier, to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, effectively signaling that they were headed into a rebuild.
Even though the Clippers have 0 championship wins they are still a good team. Like in the 2014-2015 season the Clippers went to round 2 in the playoffs. The stars of the team are Chris Paul at point guard, Blake Griffin at power forward, and Deandre Jordan at center. When them three play together
Detroit lions had a most disappointing season last year. True, there were a few bright spots but overall the season was a disaster. Now there is a new sheriff in town, Bob Quinn, and it's time for a new Lions organization. There are some holes on this team for certain that need to be addressed.
Kieffer Bellows (USNTDP) – USHL In what projects to be a difficult game, Daniel Vladar will be entrusted with goaltending duties against the United States Development Team this weekend. Vladar was considered as one of the best Czech goaltenders for his age group, and was highly successful during his junior career with HC Kladno back home. In North America for the first time, the adjustment to the smaller ice surface has been a challenging one, especially for such a position cognizant goaltender like Vladar. He has been given the majority of the starts for Chicago thus far, and will hope to improve upon his .896 save-percentage. Kieffer Bellows is no stranger to the USHL, having recently won a Clark Cup with the Sioux Falls Stampede.
Jack Eichel, C -- A high ankle sprain during training camp derailed what could have been a top 10 finish in Yahoo fantasy last season. Despite missing 21 games, Eichel had 57 points (24 goals, 33 assists), 24 power-play points and led the NHL in shots per game (4.1) with 249 in 61 games. If the 20-year-old can stay healthy, there 's no reason he can 't finish with around a point per game, 30 PPP and 300 shots on goal this
Is it smart for the Red Sox to try to sign David Price this offseason? There is lots of spiculation on whether the Red Sox will shoot for the all star pitcher but there is no answer currently. He is a very skilled pitcher and has had many all-star years in his ten year career. David Prices contract is expiring after this season and the Boston Red Sox lack pitching. Although he is getting older and his skills are decreasing, he would be a strong pick up for the Boston Red Sox.
There’s nothing the Blackhawks should be disappointed in. Well, maybe not being able to beat the Blues’ goalie, Brian Elliot. With an impressive 254 saves and 18 goals allowed, Elliot came out as the star of the series. Though the Hawks may have finally figured him in Game 6 where he allowed 5 goals on 30 saves, the playoff veteran knew how to get his composure back for a big win.
Despite this early success, he returned home early, making the director unimpressed; the director claimed Howe was too awkward because of his large, muscular size, and would not make it to the NHL. Despite this rejection by the Rangers, he continued to work hard to make a tryout with the Detroit Red Wings where his skills impressed the management. Jack Adams, coach and general manager of the team, signed him to a contract, and at seventeen Howe played on a Red Wings’ minor league team in Nebraska, and he was given a chance to play in the major leagues the next year. In 1946, Howe made the Red Wings, playing his first game where he scored a goal, skating
Before the All-Star Game happens the NHL puts a poll for the fans to pick which players they want to be the captains for their division teams. On that poll, it allows other fans to see which players are popular in the vote and what the players are ranked as. Fans will be happier to see the players they picked on the ice playing in the game, which in turn will make the game more entertaining for the
Canadians who love hockey should consider talking to the NHL, to add another Canadian team. It has been 24 years since a Canadian team entered the NHL as an expansion team,so it's time to start adding more Canadian teams. Clearly Canada has the right environment to have more teams so why not add more. Although Canada does not have the biggest Cities, they will likely increase in population by a lot. I believe that hockey is better off played in snow and ice, and not in a desert so why do they add more American teams in extremely warm climates.
Saul’s life at St.Jerome 's was hell, everywhere he looked there was agony and heartbreak. “We lived under constant threat. If it wasn’t the direct physical threat of beatings, the Iron Sisters or vanishing, it was the dire threat if purgatory, hell…” Page 80. As a result hockey became an escape for Saul, something so pure that helped Saul cope with the nightmare his life became.
The Globe and Mail, 20 Mar. 2016. Web. 04 Apr. 2017. Bobby Smith not only played in the NHL for 15 years, he has also coached 5 years in the league and 13 years with Halifax in a lower league. He brings up two greats of the sport, Bobby Orr and Jarome Iginla, both saying the same thing.
The date was February 22, 1980 in a snowy Lake Placid New York; “Morrow up to Silk, you’ve got five seconds left in the game, do you believe in miracles? Yes!” and so it began. Al Michael’s call ended the game, but the games impact just began to be recognized across America. The United States Men’s Olympic Hockey Team had just beaten the Soviet Union’s Olympic team 4 to 3 in a major upset that shocked the world.
It all began in Colorado Springs, 1979 as Herb Brooks interviewed with the Unites States Olympic Committee of Hockey. In an era were the Cold War is going on and the Soviet Union is dominating the sport of hockey, Herb walks into the meeting demanding changes in the way the US hockey team prepares and trains. He shares his philosophy
