According to the article “How Tap Water Became Toxic in Flint, Michigan,” written by Sara Ganim and Linh Tran, the residents of Flint, Michigan highly disapproved of the new water source. Around 2 years ago, the city of Flint was forced to switch their water supply from Lake Huron to a more local source, Flint River. Before, this was not a big problem to the residents of Flint because they were told that the water they were drinking was harmless. However, people began to doubt that the water they were drinking was safe because it looked like sewage. The city of Flint, Michigan and its residents have been suffering from their own tap water for months. When a resident turns on a water faucet in their home, the water emits a strange smell and the color comes out brown. It turns out that water contains a high amount of iron and lead. Recent studies have shown that the water in Flint, Michigan has been contaminated by a horrible health impact, lead. This has happened because nearly two years ago, the state of Michigan decided to save money by switching Flint’s water supply from Lake Huron, to the Flint River a notorious tributary that runs through town known to locals for its filth. This has led to many terrible effects shown in both children and adults. The many effects lead has on children and adults are very drastic if not taken care of properly they could have lifetime effects. Dangerous effects lead can lead to that effect children.
When Flint switched water supplies they went from lake water to river water and switched filtration plants, causing many challenges that only resulted in problems and unsafe drinking water. River water is more challenging to treat than lake water due to; chemical manufacturers along the river, rainwater and snowmelt, road salt, and agricultural runoff. (Poisoned Water, 2017) After the switch was made, citizens began to complain of various symptoms and the city issued a health warning advising to boil the water to kill off any bacteria that may be present.
