WF is mainly divided in to two components i.e. water consumed for the production and the polluted water throughout the production process .Water consumption refers to the water which is lost from the reservoir or from the available catchment area due to the evaporation and evapotranspiration processes and water footprint refers to the water which is used for the production of goods and the service which we used. Water is essential and very important for energy production. Water is considered as the hidden input for the various types of the power plant. Water is used in the extraction, processing and transport of the fuels and also to grow biomass for bioenergy. When coal is mined, water is needed for the different processes like the coal washing, machine cooling etc. Water and energy are two critical and important necessities for modern world. The WF can distinguish the green and blue water of crop water consumption, and may contribute to the assessment of agricultural water utilization, as it permit the comparison of crops from the perspective of water consumption type. It can also reflect the water productivity of crop production. The blue water footprint of the crop means that surface or ground water required for the crop production and grey water footprint means the volume of water that is required to assimilate the the load of pollutants based on existing ambient water quality
