"I've always loved the idea of not being what people expected me to be" - Dita Von Teese. The novel Water for Elephants" by Sarah Gruen is about two main characters. Jacob, who just lost his parents in a cruel, sufferable way and to deal with this tragedy Jacob leaves town to only stumble upon a circus. He joins this circus as a close to almost vet; considering he didn’t exactly take the exam but did go to school. He meets many new people and falls in love with someone so unexpected. Rosie is the second character, August bought her, a mean and abusive man. Rosie is perceived as a dumb bull, but later to be found out she's smarter than anyone could ever imagine. Due to Rosie's inability to comprehend English, people perceive her as stupid; however, she later turns to be an asset to the circus. “ ‘nodge,’ he says [to Rosie]. ‘no, daj nodge!’ after a moment the elephant lifts her foot and holds it in front of her.’’ (Gruen 226-227). Rosie can’t understand English causing her to get abused when she is being spoken to by August, but when Greg speaks to her in Polish Jacob observes that she understands. This gives Jacob an idea on how to train Rosie without her being beat by August. …show more content…
“…she rewards him by removing his hat, placing it on her head, and then posing with her trunk curled in the air” (163). This shows that Rosie is intelligent because August would never believe that a dumb bull could do this, and when she did something that proves that she's smart when someone talks to her in a language she understands, she can do great
Her personality changes every minute because she somehow has a split personality order as well. Now, in chapters 16, 17, and 18, Lydia is showing some of her mother’s side. Rosie felt bad for her mother because Lydia didn’t want anyone to know that she has this illness that affects her mind and she can’t keep thinking for herself. It’s too stressful to bear. How come Lydia became motherly to Rosie?
Former first lady and politician Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.” In Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken biography, Louis Zamperini showed great leadership when trying to keep himself and his remaining crew members alive while stranded in the Pacific for 47 days. Inspiring audiences, Hillenbrand highlights Louis's leadership skills that reunited himself and others with their families after the war.
Considering the plea that George urged to Wallace Porter in order to aid him, it answers why Porter bought the circus, he saw the elephant. “Seeing the elephant” expresses someone who experiences a tragic event in which he or she did not desire but ended up learning from it; well, at least Wallace Porter did. In Cathy Day’s story, “Wallace Porter- or What It Means to See the Elephant” from her novel, The Circus in the Winter, she writes about generations of the Great Porter Circus who were all centered in Lima, Indiana. Wallace Porter owned the Great Porter Circus in which he bought from Clyde Hollenbach. The circus used to be called Hollenbach’s Menagerie under Hollenbach’s ownership, though after long, difficult years, he had no way of paying
Living life deliberately some people might say it’s not wasting time just trying to be the cool person, but to make a difference in our own life or others that would benefit the world. The book that my classmates and I read is called Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer about Christopher Johnson McCandless, who travels around after he graduates from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Very tragic that his cause of death was starvation on the date of April 19 and he was in a bus along Susanna River which is in Alaska. The question is if I think McCandless lives deliberately or in other words with a purpose. My answer would always be no, because he runs away from his problem's and doesn't try to face reality.
“I don’t think you’re going to win this time,” says Rosie . “That new girl should give you a run for your money.” Squeaky doesn't take into consideration what everyone is saying because she thinks that her´s is the only one that matters.
The quotes from Jack Thayer helped me feel the intensity and emotion of the story “Into the Dark Water” By Lauren Tarshis. In this story, Jack Thayer a 17 year boy stuck fighting for his life on the Titanic. As it sank he lost his parents and all he had was his friend. There was quotes from him that kept you reading. It felt like you were there and what it was like to go through tragedy.
What stands out the most me to in We the Animal by Justin Torres is, the cycle of abuse that is going on and how it constantly affects the children. In this book the main character's father constantly beats their mother. One example is in the beginning of the chapter “Big Dick Truck,” the main character's father buys a truck. And the mother starts questions the father on why he would buy a truck when they have kids. She feels as though it wouldn't be safe.
She rose and stepped off the porch and in one swift motion snatched up the rooster, tucked his body under her left arm, and with her right hand pulled off his head … —He 'll be stringy, so we 'd best stew him awhile, Ruby said.” (Frazier, 68) Ruby has a knack for being practical. She gets work done around the farm quickly and efficiently, all the while teaching Ada. Ruby saves Ada from starvation, showing qualities of leadership and pragmatism. Ada respects Ruby as a masculine figure on the farm, “Ada had soon noted the Ruby’s lore included … raising of crops … both animal and vegetable … constantly pointing out the little creatures that occupy the nooks of the world.”
Into The Wild was a tremendous story which Shaun Callarman did not have many positive things to say about Chris McCandless, the main character. He went on this adventure to find out what life is all about in his own eyes. He wanted to see how different living in the wild really was compared to society because he was not satisfied with his living arrangements and household. Shaun’s quote says that he thinks “Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness.

“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a man, Sanger Rainsford, whose ideals and overall character change throughout the story, specifically about hunting, due to his encounter with General Zaroff. At the beginning of the story Rainsford is a stuck up man. He could not care less about any other living things other than humans. He believes all living wildlife are expendable and only there for his pleasure of hunting. During the story Rainsford has to make many quick and overall difficult decisions during his encounters with the ocean, General Zaroff, and the island wilderness to survive, that change how he thinks about animals.
The Lake Ladies, by Walter Paul Gullen, delivers a classic mystery novel with detail and plot, along with the representation of the individual vs. society. “I was closest with Chunsheng. He would always be next me, pulling my arm asking, ‘Do you think we 'll be killed?’ ‘I don 't know’ I 'd reply. As he asked me this my heart would feel wave after wave of pain”(64). Chunsheng and Fugui are two characters from the book To Live with a very complicated relationship.
To me, the most ambitious person I can think of is Joseph Merrick, more commonly known as ‘The Elephant Man’. He may not have made great inventions that contributed to the world, or saved anybody 's life. On the contrary, Joseph Merrick made some people 's lives harder, he was in simple terms a living, breathing, talking eyesore, and a burden to most. He suffered greatly from Proteus Syndrome; this caused him to grow more skin than the average person, unusual bone growth, along with the formation of large tumors. How was he ambitious?
