ABSTRACT

Livestock farming is one of the factors that caused water pollution due to direct deposition of animal wastes within river. Monitoring water quality index can be used as a method to access the health of any river. As we know, there are lacks of water analysis in rural areas especially due to livestock farming waste discharge in Malaysia. Moreover, inadequate water analysis data due to constrain budget and bad planning are the regular problems happened in our country. A method is proposed for determine the impact of livestock farming on water quality at Tampoi Besar River, Kuala Langat. Direct deposition of animal wastes within rivers or indirectly through runoff can pose a threat to human health, because of the presence of harmful pathogens such as Escherichia coli (E.coli) (Nagels et al., 2002). One of the methods to access the health of any river is to monitor the Water Quality Index (WQI). Data on the water quality are used to determine the status by examining to see whether it is clean, slightly polluted or polluted. Water quality index have been conducted by several researchers (Gupta et al., 2003, Kannel et al., 2007, Said et al., 2004, Taner et al., 2011). Hence, the impact of livestock farming on water quality is established for the improvement of future water quality. All of the laboratory works in this study are according to Interim National Water Standards for Malaysia (INWQS) and the WQI.

As we know, there are lacks of water analysis in rural areas especially due to livestock farming waste discharge in Malaysia. Moreover, inadequate water analysis data due to constrain budget and bad planning are the regular problems happened in our country. In addition, some laboratory water quality test is time consuming and required a relatively large water sample to analyze it. Besides, the results obtain is not correct due to bad quality of handling of laboratory testing on the water samples.
Individual or group of parameters may be used as an indicator of Pollution status. A more accurate indicator is the Water Quality Index (Cude, 2000; Hamlat et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2013). Hence, a study on the impact of livestock farming on water quality such as ammonia nitrogen, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, dissolve oxygen, pH, total suspended solid and E-coli is important in order to have a better water class than the current.
1.3 Research Objectives
The objectives of this study are to:
1) To test the water sample using 6 water quality index parameters and E-coli during dry and wet season.
2) To determine status of river and classify based on Interim National Water Standard for Malaysia (INWQS) and Water Quality Index (WQI).
3) To determine the risk and impact from the waste discharge to ecosystem.
