Pollutants from factories, cars, boats, and litter are all the things humans use to pollute the bay. The bay contains a high amount of phosphorus and nitrogen. Phosphorus and nitrogen are needed for organisms and plants to be able to survive. However, an excess amount of phosphorus and nitrogen degrade the quality of Chesapeake bays water. Phosphorus and nitrogen feed algae blooms that block sunlight to the underwater bay grass and leaving a low supply of oxygen in the water.
Ocean polluting has big impact on human’s health too. As those chemicals are ingested by the animals, it is not good for humans. Because we are at the end of the food chain, we consume contaminated fish and mammals. We might consume much more toxic chemicals than the sea animals. The oysters are a significant component of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem due to their ability to filter particles from water, which results in a cleaner water quality (Jacobson, 2013). The bay is currently experiencing a long-lasting drought, and the Department of Natural Resources is concerned that such crisis will leave a repercussion for the Chesapeake Bay water quality. The salinity level of the bay has been greatly affected by drought, which is influencing the oyster population of the bay. This can be a problem when there are fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, pet waste, oil, and other pollutants on the ground that can get washed into the storm drain. When these pollutants are on impervious surfaces that do not allow soil to soak and filter contaminants out, they go into storm drains. Pollutants in the Puget Sound can be harmful to marine life. According to King County, less than half of salmon and steelhead stocks in the Puget Sound are healthy (“What is Stormwater Runoff?”). Many people rely on fish in this area for food, business, and recreation.
This increases the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and chronic respiratory disease. This is happening because the water that usually flows into the Salton Sea is being diverted away and being sent to big cities for usage. Farmers are using less water which means less water is being drained into the sea. This is causing the dry up. If the Salton Sea starts to dry up severely both wildlife and humans will be affected.

Many people claim that desalination is an energy wasteful process, is extremely expensive and can damage the environment, particularly marine life. When the seawater is sucked in to be desalinated, plankton and fish and even birds can be sucked in and killed as well. When the salt water is extracted from the fresh water, the salty ‘brine’ is put back into the ocean where it sinks to the bottom because it is denser than normal sea water. This could have unknown consequences but because the process is so knew it is hard to tell how detrimental they will be. It is issues like that which have stopped a plant like this being built in the past.
