Research statement
My research over the last couple of years has focused on waterpipe smoking among youth. Within this broad topic, I address three questions: a) who are those individuals exposed to health warning labels (HWLs) on waterpipe tobacco? that is, what are the demographic characteristics of this group? b) What are the effects of the exposure of these HWL on their harm perception about waterpipe smoking? Here I examine what individuals think about the relative harm of waterpipe smoking with that of other tobacco products, for example, cigarettes. c) What are the effects on quitting interest? I study individual’s quit attempts and plans to quit. I investigate these questions using the PATH (Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health),

This article written by Joe Nocera is a highly controversial topic within teens and young adults. The use of e-cigarettes has been scrutinized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a new found addiction. The CDC believes that e-cigarettes are just as dangerous as normal cigarettes and are a detriment to the public health. Throughout the paper, Nocera is illustrating to the reader that he is very one sided with his opinion. Necura believe that e-cigarettes are not harming the youth but acting as a diversion to smoking combustible cigarettes.

Smoke Gun Advertisement Ever since the first cigarette was made, smoking has become a problem for our country, and it continues to negatively affect the people who smoke and even those who do not. People who smoke are damaging their health and making themselves susceptible to diseases like lung cancer and emphysema. People who do not smoke can be exposed to second-hand smoking, which can lead to serious health risks as well. The government has taken action to help the health of the country by paying for and creating anti-smoking advertisements to persuade smokers to quit or to prevent others from smoking in the future.
Peer pressure is largely harped on by anti-smoking campaigns, and is an important aspect for many people who start to smoke. Socioeconomic status is significant attribute that can provide insight to the peer pressure a young person may feel. Many young people, are influenced by their peer groups and by the media’s perception of smoking. The marketing of smoking has played a significant role in branding and targeting young people to smoke, because when you make them an addict at a young age, you have them for a lifetime. Although, this article does provide few statistics, it is very opinion oriented and would not provide very much detailed or accurate information when researching how tobacco users and health insurance coincide. It was too general as an article. It did catch my interest about how much money non-smokers save a month by not spending the extra money on tobacco products and the extra money towards health insurance. The author’s audience could be anybody wanting to buy insurance as they sell multiple insurances but the author provides information comparing the cheapest and higher rates for smokers and non-smokers and the difference between each insurance company. This source fits into my research about how much health insurance and smoker are effected by tobacco.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 15.1% of United States’ adults smoke. The Action on Smoking and Healthy Organizations seeks to communicate the risks associated with smoking and support greater restrictions on cigarette and tobacco sales. Therefore, the anti-tobacco organization in their print advertisement addresses the number of smokers in the United States. ASH’s purpose is to convey that children readily mimic the habits of their parents and siblings – even the bad practices. In attempts to promote reform among parents and siblings who smoke, ASH, uses multiple rhetorical elements.
Electronic cigarettes were first introduced into the tobacco market in 2003. However, in the last few years, electronic cigarettes have been trending, especially among high school students. According to the Surgeon General study, “In 2015, 1 in 6 high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the last month”. The promotion and production of electronic cigarettes is an issue that must be addressed because they are attracting minors who may have never been addicted to nicotine prior to the introduction of e-cigarettes in the market. Companies have branded e-cigarettes as a ‘safer’ alternative to regular cigarettes, however, it is quite possible that consumers, more specifically the youth, are not well informed of the ingredients in them.

Moreover, there is more report that children drinking the e-cigarette juice and become horribly ill. For example a case in New York where a toddler died after ingesting liquid nicotine intended for use in an e-cigarette as many parents unaware of the safety risks to children from unsafe storage of e-liquid.
