Between the two stories, “Charles,” and, “The Lottery,” there were many differences and similarities between these two stories. They are both written by Shirley Jackson, which could contribute to their similarities. There are three differences and three similarities that really stand out.
In the Poem, “Making Sarah Cry”, the author shows us that the theme of the poem is being different because in the beginning, the main character and his friends bully Sarah and the main character says, “Sarah was unlike the rest; She was slow and not as smart, And it would seem to all his friends She was born without a heart.” This evidence shows the theme being different since at the beginning of the text they say “Sarah was unlike the rest” this clearly shows the theme is being different because the term, unlike the rest, shows Sarah was different from everyone else. In the middle, the main character deals with a horrible accident, leaving a jagged scar on his face, he comes back to school to play with his friends but they say,”An awkward smile crossed his face when he heard the words, ‘Hey Freak, Where 'd you get the ugly mask?’ He turned, expecting Sarah, But Sarah could not be seen. It was the scar upon his own face That caused such words so mean.” In the middle of the story when the main character
Bravery is everywhere. Courage is happening in real life, stories, and even with animals. Boldness is shown in 2011 when an actress named Kate Winslet rescues Richard Branson's mother from a burning house. Another time Winslet showed boldness was when the Virgin Island were struck by lightning by Hurricane Irene. She went into a burning house, rescued children then rescued their mother, even though the house eventually burnt down. All in all, she still showed guts by rescuing a family and going into a burning house. Being brave happens naturally most times. Lastly, bravery could be learning to ride a bike without training wheels since you may fall and scrape yourself badly. In The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson, Freedom Summer by Deborah
Authors, although you may not notice at first glance, always have a specific style of writing that effects the tone of their writing. Scott Simon's, "SEVEN DECADES ON," and Martin Niemoller's, " First, They Came," equally show how each's style contributes to the two of their text. Some examples of style that effect tone is sentence structure, vocabulary, and use of irony.
The threat of Communism and the Red Scare put fear of group mentality into many people during the late 1940-50s. The authors of 1984 and The Crucible used their respective works to comment on the social injustice going on in their own lives, which connects to injustice the exists throughout time anywhere in the world. Miller wrote his play, set in 1692, about Puritans and the Salem witch trials because he believed that, similar to his trial for HUAC in the 1950s, the trials in Salem were caused by false accusations and mass hysteria led by powerful individuals. In 1984, Orwell creates a world in the near future that shows group mentality and its threat to conform society with the government. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller illustrates a world
For the past few days, my class watched and read The Watson 's go to Birmingham. This book/movie is about a young boy named Kenny, with a family of five visiting their grandma in Birmingham, Alabama. Kenny, Joey, and Byron are not used to going down south, they live in Michigan all their life.In this book, Kenny, Joey, and Bryon faced the real world. They know the things that they had to do because of the color of their skin. Like going to the back of the movie theater with a sign saying colored people only. They had to walk up the back off to the highest section of the theater .They were so confused, you can see the look on their faces. This is all taking place in 1963. As we know, 1963 wasn 't a very good year for African American’s

In both passages “Watsons Go To Birmingham” and “Making Sarah Cry” have a common theme of Kindness. Although both passages share the same theme they have a different mood. In the story “Watsons Go To Birmingham” the mood is sad. In the story “Making Sarah Cry” the mood is also sad but it is also happy.
Have you ever done a courageous act? The Souls and Mrs. Olinski sure have! In The View from Saturday, The Souls and Mrs. Olinski displayed many acts of courage. Not only that, but they user their courage to tackle the problems E.L. Konigsburg gave them. It is clearly obvious that these kids are dauntless.
W-O-W Byron sure is one wild ride! In the book The Watson’s go to Birmingham there are two brothers by the name of Byron and Kenny. Byron has hands down shown a tremendous change in his attitude and behavior… Leading to him always wanting to be the instigator of the family, giving his parents, inadequate temper, and at the end he assuredly became courteous and loving to his family.
In both stories, The Watsons go to Birmingham and Making Sarah cry has the same themes being different. In the story The Watsons go to Birmingham, they faced discrimination. Also in the story Making Sarah Cry the bully was getting bullied and Sarah came and said “ stop bullying him because he is a friend of mine” and when the bully’s stopped bully boy and bullied Sarah the boy also stood up for Sarah,This is being different because before the boy used to bully Sarah but now that he saw that Sarah stood up for him so did he. This two stories are different because of their affect on society. One story is about race and the other story is about a girl getting bullied on the playground.
One significant lesson learned by the characters in “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” and “I Escaped a Violent Gang” is courage. In the “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” the kids of the town show courage by fighting for their rights even when they know they can be put in jail. In the memoir “I Escaped a Violent Gang” Ana shows courage by turning a gang member into the police to help her family and herself. Even though they have the same themes, the characters’ actions are different in the risk that they take.
In Making Sarah Cry, the theme is overcoming obstacles in many different ways. One way the theme is overcoming obstacles is because of how Sarah was getting bullied throughout the story, but eventually got through it and became friends with the bullies. This is shown in the story because there is a quote that says “...and teaching their new friend Sarah how to play. This is huge to go from being bullied everyday and crying everyday, to then eventually become friends with the bullies so that they wouldn’t be mean anymore. Also, when the text said, “this time he didn’t join in and at last understood why.” This is because
We have to have courage when things get hard, even if no good comes from it. During reading the novel, “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry”, Mildred D. Taylor explains how a nine year old girl shows courage throughout the book. Mildred shows Cassie’s courage by writing about how Cassie stood up for her little brother, how she stood up for her rights at Strawberry, and how Cassie was always there for T.J., even though T.J. was a bad person. These points show how Cassie proved her courageousness to her family, friends, and the readers.
“The Watsons Go to Birmingham” and “ Making Sarah Cry” both show the theme of courage. For example, the Watsons had courage to fight for their rights. In “Making Sarah Cry” the boy had courage to stand up to his “Friends” because he knew that what he was doing was wrong. Although they have a lot of reasons why are similar they show courage in very different ways like through their characters actions. They acted differently because in “ Making Sarah Cry” the boy was following his peers because he thought it was right, but he didn't understand why they did it, however in “ The Watsons Go to Birmingham” the Watsons weren’t gonna give up and they didn't care about the consequences ahead of them.
