For example, quoting, “https://www.greatschools.org/gk/articles/school-uniforms/” by Marian Wilde, “School uniforms violate a student’s right to freedom of expression...makes a target for bullies from other schools, are difficult to enforce in public schools, and are a financial burden for poor families.” This means that some families aren’t able to afford the school uniforms. Which, leads to many students getting bullied for not having uniforms like their
Once again, the article “School Uniform Statistics: 23 Facts on Pros and Cons” states, “Aside from the reduced expenses associated with uniforms, educators agree that they offer plenty of other positives. Around 85% argue that it reduces the need for discipline in the classroom while 79% say it promotes an increased sense of student safety.” This quote concludes that by wearing a uniform to school, parents spend less money and the policy reduces the need for constant nagging. This would lead to students focusing more on other vital topics and not just the dress and hair their peers are wearing, since everyone is wearing the same outfit as one another. Some might not agree and say that to ensure order, wearing a school uniform is not the solution.
Introduction Dress codes in American high schools have always been a controversial topic, in 1965, the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District case caused the supreme court to rule that schools can prohibit forms of expression but must show that allowing it would be a safety risk or interfere with the educational purpose of school (School Dress Codes, 2021). In 2018, The National Center for Education Statistics reported that 50% of US public schools enforced dress codes that violated students’ freedom of expression and religion (School Dress Codes, 2021). While some dress codes may not be constitutional due to them violating students’ first amendment, many are enforced for students’ safety, due to them preventing violence
Dating back to 1222, people have been at odds over the topic of uniforms. The drastic changes between uniforms then and now has played a role in the what is considered “appropriate” or professional. The first uniform recognized for students to wear was established in England when Archbishop of Canterbury ordered that all students wear a robe-like outfit called the “cappa Clausa” (History of School Uniforms). Centuries later, the concept of uniforms were seen to be associated with people in the upper class, but over time had spread to private and conservative schools and some public schools. Despite the continuity of uniforms throughout educational institutions, students are being forced to promote conformity rather than individuality.
In conclusion, we at Tyndale Christian School believe in utilising a school uniform policy as it can help us meet the philosophies of our school in regards to the students. A uniform can help ensure that all students feel valued and equal as it eliminates peer pressure and bullying relating to a students clothing choice whilst simultaneously promoting a sense of equality, belonging, safety and community. Furthermore, a uniform can eliminate distractions resulting in a bigger focus on learning, and also teaches students’ life skills such as discipline and responsibility as they will receive consequences if the uniform policy isn’t met. It is through these policies and philosophies that we can hope to educate our students and encourage their
Envision waking up every morning to put on the same outfit and walk out the door, stress free. People would not have to worry about what fits, or what is fashionable at the time. Schools would not have to worry about inappropriate clothing but at the same time, that clothing may be a way for a student to express himself. Many schools view uniforms as a solution to several problems, but many schools view uniforms as a lack of self expression. School uniforms should continue, even though children may not get to express themselves, because they prohibit violence, provide cheaper lifestyles, and promote better education.
Many students that know uniforms will be beneficially, but don’t agree with school uniforms will continue to disagree with implementing them. It can be easily agreed that school uniforms may take away their self-expression in school, but what matters more in school is the way of learning. It can also be agreed that many students do not accept the self-expression of their classmates and make fun of them. Students, parents, and school administration should be able to recognize the benefits that school uniforms come with.
This shows uniforms can remove distractions from what students wear. School uniforms create a level playing field among students, reducing peer pressure and bullying. When all students are dressed alike, competition between students over clothing choices and the teasing of those who are dressed in less expensive or less fashionable outfits can be eliminated. Research by the Schoolwear Association found that 83% of teachers
In the article of Dr. Alan Hilfer from 2009, “Disadvantages of a School Uniform Policy” stated that “We need free thinking children of to become thinkers of tomorrow, not droned who will continue making the mistakes of previous generations”(Hilfer, 2009). Feelings on school uniforms seem to differ as much as the reasons for having them, hate it, or love it. Recent studies done in the University of Alabama states that: “Student Uniform use was not significantly correlated with any of the school commitment variables. In addition, students wearing uniforms did not appear to have any significantly different academic performance” (Brunsma & Rockquemore, 1998). The problem whether schools should still be continuously implemented is a highly debatable topic.
Many high schools have implemented dress codes that set rules for what students can and cannot wear while on school premises, and yet many people disagree with these policies. Though arguments can be made for either side, a dress code can have a very positive outcome for all parties involved. A fixed dress code promotes professionalism in a learning environment, and contrary to popular belief, it does not limit a student’s freedom of expression. Last but not least it encourages equality and acceptance among their peers. A dress code can be reasonable if used in proper situations that require certain attires.
