A drought is an atmospheric condition in which there is little to no rainfall over a long period of time. Usually, the amount of rainfall drops under the average amount and the weather becomes hotter. Droughts can cause economic despair in areas heavily affected. The lack of rain destroys the environment and makes it difficult for people and animals to survive. Lakes become dry valleys and rivers are reduced to a trickle of water. The word “drought” comes from English, German, and Dutch words meaning “dry”. Meteorological, agriculture, hydrological, and socioeconomic are the four different types of droughts. They each affect people and land differently. Droughts are severe weather disasters that cause a large impact on society and on the economical …show more content…
Evapotranspiration is the process in which water is transferred from the land to the atmosphere by evaporation from soil and other surfaces, and by transpiration from plants. Plants depend on water from precipitation and they will die without it creating a shortage of plant growth which can eventually lead to a drought. Hydrological droughts are affected by periods of precipitation. “The frequency and severity of hydrological drought is often defined on a watershed or river basin scale.” If it takes longer for the period of precipitation to show up then a Hydrological drought starts. Precipitation deficiency can cause loss of soil moisture. All droughts can be affected by precipitation deficiency, but the drought most often caused by precipitation deficiency is Hydrological. The two droughts above are very different and have that one similarity. There are actually are four types of droughts, Meteorological droughts and Socioeconomic droughts and the other two above. In conclusion, the two droughts are very different. The agricultural droughts are caused by a shortage in things such as plants. The hydrological droughts are caused by the periods of time when the rain comes. But they have one similarity, they are both can be caused by precipitation deficiency. …show more content…
Droughts have many effects, on people, the economy, the environment, and even the occurrence of other types of weather. Droughts are very destructive in general and can lead to other possibly destructive weather, including wildfires, dust storms, and desertification. The effects of drought can make it hard to make money, cause health issues, and ruin the environment. Droughts can affect supply and demand. They cause the quality, quantity, and price of products to change rapidly. This is frustrating for the citizens living through the drought. Farmers and manufactures also have to change their plans due to the lack of supplies. Drought also affects transportation of goods due to water levels. Thankfully, drought can be measured, identified, and predicted by humans. Scientist use a tool called the Palmer Drought Severity Index, created in 1965. Severe droughts in history can help scientists study more, so as to be knowledgeable about droughts in the present and future. Droughts are a very serious weather phenomenon that can have traumatizing effects on many parts of
Due to this unwritten law made before the drought, Parvinder Hundal, a farmer that started his business in 1986 is feeling just how devastating this drought really is. In February, he received several emails from his main water districts telling him
There were many droughts in Jamestown. Weather the droughts were short, severe, long, or not a big deal, droughts were very prominent during the Jamestown period. As shown in Document B Jamestown had multiple droughts throughout Jamestown history. In fact there was a drought named the Jamestown drought that was very severe and happened through about 1605 and 1610. However Jamestown was not just affected by drought it was also affected by starvation.
The start of this drought may have started when the settlers first came to Florida. The settlers considered the Everglades useless swampland. Since then they had the idea of draining
Well in the southeast part of Ame rica in the 1580’s had a severe drought that caused problems to Roanoke. The colonist lost most of their supplies on the way to Roanoke, so they needed to live off the land. Droughts have this thing were they kind of destroy plants because it takes way a lot of the water in an area and plants need water. This is not the only time climate change destroyed or forced to relocate groups because researchers have found “evidence has mounted in recent years that climatic change played a major role in the rise and fall of ancient civilizations, especially in the Middle East and South America” ("Drought May Have"). Researcher have researched the rings in trees from the Roanoke area and found that they had one of the worst droughts since 787 A.D.
(Lin, 2015) While the definition and causes facilitate the understanding of runoff, the effects assist
We typically do not give much thought to what we call “home”. We perceive home as somewhere we go after a long day, somewhere we can enjoy the simpler pleasures in life away from the restlessness of work. However in The Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac, it challenges our general notion of home for an unorthodox one—a notion that a home goes outside of comfort zones, rather than inside them. At face value, the Keys have everything: it is rich, secure, and organized. But by glimpsing outside its walls, we discover that those qualities can bring more problems than we see at first glance.
“The impact is like a shovelful of fine sand slung against the face” (Carlson). There have been numerous impacts on the United States that made the nation turn into a disastrous place. One of the various effects during the Great Depression was the Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl affected countless crops in the farmers’ fields, but the Great Depression itself limited the amount of crops that the farmers could plant (17 Interesting Facts). The name of the Dust Bowl was given due to the tremendous amount of dust storms that were occurring so often.
The drought’s direct effect is most often remembered as agricultural, many crops were damaged by deficient rainfall, high temperatures, and high winds, as well as insect infestations and dust storms that accompanied these conditions. This caused many migrant workers to not be feed, as the food source was very limited. In conclusion these three events play a huge role in
The affected regions could not recover from the previous drought before the next drought hit which made it feel like one long drought that just progressively got worse. The last drought didn't even end until 1940.The drought made it harder to harvest the crops the farmers needed to support themselves financially, so the economy declined dramatically. This was also one of the leading causes of the Great
The drought got to a lot of the states and it did not turn out good at all. The big drought toke one third of the great plans. According to 4, the drought did not cause the black blizzards. Every 25 years it will happen and it is not good.
Out of all the explanations this one has the most evidence proving that the drought is the most logical theory. This evidence was found by a team led by David Stahle, who has a Ph.D. and a M.A. in Geography. His team made a very sophisticated study with the tree rings of the remaining trees that are still in the area. They discovered something incredibly surprising. In the summers of 1587-1589, they had the worst drought in almost 800 years.
The Struggle Through the Dust Bowl The Dust Bowl left the Great Plains with dry land and nowhere to farm. This led many people to move in search of jobs or new technology purchased using credit. Although everyone struggled, African Americans took the hit harder, as they were discriminated and lost jobs to whites. All residents of the Great Plains were affected, but African Americans were most significantly impacted.
In the article “Water Worries Grow in the Desert Southwest,” Rice (2013) talks about climate changes and causes that impact on water in the desert Southwest. The author mentioned Native Americans, they used canals and dams to bring water since 10 centuries. Today, there are 56 million Americans growing up in Southwest and they have region’s natural dryness. Also, Arizona state has less rain every year around 7.5 inches. In addition, Colorado River is most important to help 30 million people in Southwest.
Agricultural practices did as well. Farmers had been using intensive farming techniques such as monoculture, overgrazing, and deep plowing to maximize their crop yields. These practices led to the depletion of soil nutrients, leaving it vulnerable to erosion by wind and water. Additionally, farmers had removed native grasses that held the soil together and replaced them with crops like wheat. When drought hit the region in the 1930’s, these unsustainable practices exacerbated its effects.
During the period of the dust bowl, dust storms would parade over the agriculture of many US prairies. The dust bowl was a man made phenomenon. The drought at the time didn’t help either. The dust bowl caused great havoc on farmers and all sorts of wildlife. Plant life wasn’t safe either.
