INTRODUCTION
Information Communication Technology and Internet are considered as the largest source of worldwide information, powerful communication media and educational tools which have made a great impact on the academic activities, communication and social relation between information seekers. The new technologies have made development of the web communication and social relations. The development of Web 2.0 has brought to existence of many Social Networking Sites (SNSs). The term web 2.0 was coined by O‘Reilly Media in 2004 which refers to web application, participation, social networking, interaction and user generated content sharing. According to the data available at Facebook, the social networking site has more than 200,000,000 active users; of those users, more than 3,000,000 become fans of Facebook pages every day. Even more compelling, Facebook is overwhelmingly the most popular social networking site on the Internet. Data from the Consumer Internet Barometer Report published by the Conference Board show that 78% of online social networkers use Facebook (compared to 42% for MySpace, 17% for LinkedIn, and 10% for Twitter). Those statistics alone are reason enough to consider setting up a page for the professional journals, just for the sheer exposure the site can provide. And, if we think that the Facebook is just for college students, we are wrong. The fastest growing demographic is those 35 years and older, about the age range of professionals who are publishing articles in scholarly journals. Facebook’s reach is also highly international, with approximately 70% of its users residing outside of the United States. The rise of Social Networking sites, Facebook and its resources has established a better communication and revolution of the relation of world. Therefore, being a library professional, we must explore the potential and benefit of Facebook to connect with more number of users by creating a Facebook ID for the concerned library and the users should be encouraged to follow the page to keep them updated for any news items, initiatives, services and alerts sent by the library. When Social Networking Sites, especially Orkut , Facebook Twitter and LinkedIn developed on various platform, we the librarians used to block the sites and not allowing the students to access social networking sites and personal e-mal account in the library as we used to provide only useful contents available under consortia like UGC-INFONET E-Journal/ Digital Library Consortia of UGC-INFLIBNET in 172 university libraries of India and N-LIST Services in selected 6000 College Libraries across India. But owing to the enormous popularity and usage of social networking sites especially Facebook, now the Librarians are thinking to allow library users to access these SNSs including Facebook for academic purposes and make them friends of library
