Thomas Cole was originally born in Lancashire, England in 1801. In 1818 he and his parents moved to America. Cole’s father wanted him to be a lawyer. In the beginning of the 20th century was the modernism era. It included amazing and famous painters, sculptors, draughtsmen, and printmakers. In this era an amazing artist was born called Henri Matisse. He was born in 31, December 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in Northern France. He was a painter, sculptor, drafts man, and printmaker. His mother was an amateur painter and his father was a corn merchant. He studied law from 1887 to 1891 and then decided to go to Paris, to become a painter. He drew some amazing paintings and all of them had a story behind it. He drew paintings to pass time. He painted his first masterpiece in 1897, it was called The Dinner Table.

Andy Warhol is one of the many Pop Art artists, another is Roy Lichtenstein. He was born in Manhattan, New York on October 27, 1923 he died in the same city on September 29, 1997. Roy was involved in the Pop Art movement and is known for his painting and sculptures. When Roy was born, he was born into a Jewish upper-middle-class family. Lichtenstein’s Parent were Milton and Beatrice, the father was a real estate banker and his mother was a homemaker. Roy became involved in art and design as hobbies, and became interested with them, throughout his schooling. Being a jazz fan and Attending concerts at the Apollo Theater in Harlem lead to him drawing portraits of the musicians in action. Roy enrolled, at the Art Students League of New York,

Jean- Leon Gerome is a French painter, sculpture, and engraver. His works were molded after the neoclassicist and romantic style, what is now referred to as academicism. Gerome used this form to create paintings of people in exotic lands, and was born and raised in Paris, France where he studied under Paul Delaroche. In Paris, he developed his skills by painting portraits and landscapes, being praised by critics for his use of depicting historical events in fine detail. Ultimately curiosity of the world would lead him to seek out other culture to gain inspiration leading him to travel to North Africa and the near east. Here is where he began to hit his mark, painting other cultures as an outsider, and providing context into how others lived. One of these paintings of the oriental was Femme en Serail.
