Jay Gatsby was living the American dream high on life and loaded with money that is until he was killed. Jay Gatsby was Originally an incredibly secretive man was shrouded in mystery. For example, during Jay Gatsby’s summer party within his mansion in West Egg, an immeasurable amount of rumors about him were floating around such as “he killed a man once” (Fitzgerald 48). This is one rumor of many but this anonymity allowed Jay Gatsby to operate in secret and allow him to rapidly grow financially. Gatsby had originally set himself up good and had nothing to worry about to the fact that “he doesn’t want trouble with anybody” (Fitzgerald 48).
He believes he’s made it when he integrates himself with Daisy. Unfortunately, this victory won’t last long, and neither will he. Jay "the Great" Gatsby, rest in peace West Egg, NEW YORK - James Gatz, aged 33 and better known as Jay Gatsby, came to a woeful death last night in the garden 's swimming pool of his mansion. He was unexpectedly murdered when bathing in his swimming pool by a possible madman, named George Wilson. The man decided to commit suicide right after perpetrating this crime. Nick Carraway, a man that supported Jay in looking for his love, mentioned : "He must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream. "1
Dan Cody taught him many things about being rich. “His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people…the truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his platonic conception of himself…so he invented the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent...” (Fitzgerald 104). What this quote is mainly talking about is that Gatsby didn’t come from the most well off family, nor did he think he was going to go anywhere as James Gatz so, he reinvented his whole being. He changed his image, his backstory, and even his name.
He had the opportunity of creating a big life for himself on his own, but he never took it. This is similar to Sean Parker in the Social Network because he had went to Harvard, but also did not finish. (Find example in movie scene). This shows that neither of the characters valued education, and were somehow brought up and ended up making a lot of money. Their american dream came to them at the time, and didn’t have to work much for until they realized it wasn’t enough and had to try for what they really wanted, which for Gatsby was to have Daisy, and for Parker to have a big website and to be known along with
The Tragic Death of Jay Gatsby Willy Loman and Jay Gatsby were both fond of the American dream. Although they were similar in numerous manners, Gatsby’s death emerged more tragic than Loman’s. Gatsby had a higher social stature than Loman; he did not achieve his ultimate goal, and his death was unfortunately organized. Jay Gatsby, or previously recognized as James Gatz was a self-made man. He was born to a poor family and fell for Daisy Buchanan at an early age.
Then he drifted back to Lake Superior, and he was still searching for something to do...” (Fitzgerald 99). Gatsbys younger ages were rough, he attended a small college in Minnesota which he had to pay for by working for the school with the embarrassing job of a janitor.
Gatsby is a wealthy man who lives in West Egg. He tells Nick that he is “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West” (Fitzgerald, 65). He later states, “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition” (Fitzgerald, 65). This is what Gatsby wants Nick to believe but, in reality, Nick tells the reader that Gatsby was a man by the name of James Gatz and he was the son of unsuccessful farmers.
Just as these lives die in the fall, so did Gatsby’s. Though as readers, we see deeper into Gatsby’s death. Not only did Gatsby literally die, but it’s almost as his single goal, his only dream, died too. “I have an idea that Gatsby himself didn’t believe it would come and perhaps he no longer cared. If that was true he must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream,” (pg. 169).
By the end of the book Gatsby's’ lifeless body ends up in the bottom of his pool with a bullet to his chest, all of the raged that was in Wilson was unleashed on Gatsby. This scene portrays how much he loved Daisy to the point that he would take the blame for her, additionally it shows how the low class society believe that the high class society can get away with anything due how privileged they are based on the amount of money they have. In the scene at Gatsby's funeral no one but Nick and and the people who worked for him attended (164). This scene is significant because it proves to show that Jay Gatsby died an unhappy man, his reputation still remained unknown due to the fact that he did not develop special relationships with anyone, his love for Daisy was never completed and the success he yearned for was never
He was swimming in his pool waiting on Daisy to call but she never did. While he was swimming Wilson, the husband of Myrtle, shot Gatsby. This was the end of his dream. He lost his life and he would never have his
Gatsby was a man who came up from essentially nothing by gaining his money through bootlegging and other illegal acts in order to gain a reputation in society. Gatsby’s constant desire to accomplish more in his life demonstrates the corruption of the American Dream. It is evident that Gatsby has had a thirst for the American dream since a young age, this is shown when Gatsby’s father says: “Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he’s got about improving his mind?
While on the surface, Gatsby does have a ‘rags-to-riches’ story, it is not a virtuous one; he amasses his wealth through illegal channels by working with Meyer Wolfsheim, and never fulfills his dream, Daisy. Also, He changes his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby when he first encounters Dan Cody. Because Gatsby has to take on an entirely different persona to achieve success, disguising his poor upbringing and suggesting that James Gatz could never achieve the American dream. Gatsby first attempts to earn his financial success by performing menial labor for Cody, but when Cody’s ex-wife swindles Gatsby out of his inheritance, he turns to illegal means of getting rich. Not only does Gatsby illegally gain his wealth my selling grain liquor over the counter, but he also does so under the direction of Meyer Wolfsheim, breaking two essential qualities of the self-made man, virtue, and independence.
