The History and Development of the Western Concert Flute The flute has one of the longest histories of any instrument used in a music ensemble today. The instrument dates back to at least 37,000 years ago. Over the years, many instruments have been given the designation of being called a flute. Over time, the western concert flute has gone through many changes from the prehistoric age to the modern age. The flute is one of the oldest musical instruments. The oldest instrument that is closely related to the flute was found in the Swabian Alb a place in Germany. This instrument was dated to around 30,000 to 37,000 years ago. It was received with enthusiasm in the countries of France America and England. It received many prizes. However, in the countries of Germany Russia and Italy there were some misgivings about the instrument Most of the doubt resulted from the new fingering system created by Boehm. This quote well represents the feelings of the instrument form people of these countries." One prominent opponent of the Boehm flute was Richard Wagner, who described it disparagingly as a "blunderbuss", presumably on account of its unusually powerful sound." (Vienna Symphonic Library) Personally, this quote seems a little ironic since one of the complaints of the past was that the instrument did not have a strong enough sound. Even though the Boehm flute was received with some doubt, no one else could create an instrument to rival it and it gained acceptance. In the prehistoric times, flutes were made of bone and were very simple. In the medieval period, the flute gained six holes and was typically made of wood in this period the flute was used in consorts. In the Baroque period, the flute was split into three pieces and was first used in an orchestra. It was also difficult to play. In the classical period, more keys were added but it did not help to improve the instrument. In the Romantic period, the biggest change came to the instrument by the developments done by Boehm.
