The History and Development of the Western Concert Flute The flute has one of the longest histories of any instrument used in a music ensemble today. The instrument dates back to at least 37,000 years ago. Over the years, many instruments have been given the designation of being called a flute. Over time, the western concert flute has gone through many changes from the prehistoric age to the modern age. The flute is one of the oldest musical instruments. The oldest instrument that is closely related to the flute was found in the Swabian Alb a place in Germany. This instrument was dated to around 30,000 to 37,000 years ago. (Flute) Another example of pre-historic flute like instruments was found in Dordogne, France; this instrument was probably …show more content…
It was received with enthusiasm in the countries of France America and England. It received many prizes. However, in the countries of Germany Russia and Italy there were some misgivings about the instrument Most of the doubt resulted from the new fingering system created by Boehm. This quote well represents the feelings of the instrument form people of these countries." One prominent opponent of the Boehm flute was Richard Wagner, who described it disparagingly as a "blunderbuss", presumably on account of its unusually powerful sound." (Vienna Symphonic Library) Personally, this quote seems a little ironic since one of the complaints of the past was that the instrument did not have a strong enough sound. Even though the Boehm flute was received with some doubt, no one else could create an instrument to rival it and it gained acceptance. Boehm was also influential in the development of other instruments because other woodwind instruments adopted the system he created. After this time, we enter the modern …show more content…
In the prehistoric times, flutes were made of bone and were very simple. In the medieval period, the flute gained six holes and was typically made of wood in this period the flute was used in consorts. In the Baroque period, the flute was split into three pieces and was first used in an orchestra. It was also difficult to play. In the classical period, more keys were added but it did not help to improve the instrument. In the Romantic period, the biggest change came to the instrument by the developments done by Boehm. In the modern period, the flutes are still made of sliver. Through the flutes evolution we reached the present version, which was developed by Boehm and still used in today 's modern bands and
Music first started in America when it was brought by British Armies and later became a big part of America. One reason why America's bands became more advanced was achieving a wider range. Combining new instruments that were created, trombone, and French horns, a group of eight or more brass instruments, could cover a wider range from soprano to bass. Also, new horns could play melodic lines in any part of their range. Covering a wider range resulted in a better, unified, homogeneous sound.
While in the band, I played the trumpet. I chose the trumpet because It was a wonderful instrument and it was one of the easier instruments to learn to play. Trumpets come different ways and varieties that are built to play in different musical keys. The type of trumpet that I played was made to play in a B flat.
The Poem for Flute and Orchestra (1918) originally written for Georges Barrère demands high lyrical virtuosity from the performer. Technical aspects of performance all should serve to interpret the lyrical characteristic of the piece. Poem was first performed on November 16, 1919 by the New York Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Damrosch with Georges Barrère as the flute soloist. The atmospheric opening is heard as a refrain throughout the work, there are sections of dense chromatic language, polymetric dance, and enlivening technique.

I have always been a particularly musical person. When I was younger, I wanted to become a singer when I grew up, but upon joining the choir in elementary I realized I did not have the talent for singing that I thought I had. Continually singing off key and never sounding as good as my peers did, I decided to confine myself to singing at home where only my family could hear me. Despite this revelation that I was, in fact, a terrible singer, I still wanted to participate in some type of musical performance and decided to join the band in middle school. After trying out various different instruments, I settled on the flute and quickly fell in love.
Then you look at other countries, not England or Austria, but countries like Syria or Pakistan. Countries like those who don’t have the freedom to do what they want love to do, that is performing arts related or anything else that expresses what they want to do. That is why being an American means that you have the freedom of expression. When I was little, my mom got me a piano that can plug into your TV and you can play songs like themes to various shows from my childhood, Christmas songs, and songs that were playing in that year when
Few substances in history have had as profound an effect on human history as gunpowder... and its discovery was an accident! Ancient alchemists in China spent centuries trying to discover an elixir of life that would render the user immortal. One important ingredient in many of the failed elixirs was saltpeter, also known as potassium nitrate. During the Tang Dynasty, around 850 A.D., an enterprising alchemist (whose name has been lost to history) mixed 75 parts saltpeter with 15 parts charcoal and 10 parts sulfur.
He rode the wagon and blew a tin horn. Though the horns' purpose wasn’t to make music, Louis found a way to create different sounds and play different tunes. At age eleven, Louis saw a brass cornet in the pawn shop window. The family he worked with lent him the money to purchase it.
Colonial and contemporary America have many similarities and differences. Differences can be obvious because our country has advanced so drastically over the different generations, but the similarities should not go unnoticed. Although there are many, major comparisons to be made between these two eras are their music and modes of transportation. Music has evolved greatly in America over the years. Colonial America’s music was played with instruments like the harpsichord, violin, fiddle, hammered dulcimer, tabor pipe, drum, and recorder.
As in Harry Potter, where the wand chooses the wizard, the trumpet chose me—although, at the time, I thought I was choosing the trumpet. Four wind musicians stood before me in my elementary school’s auditorium. Each one played an excerpt showcasing the instrument’s ability, trying to entice us all to play that instrument. I was able to resist the lures of three, but the fourth instrument, the trumpet, captured my eye and resonated with my soul. Little did I know, that sound would come to mean so much more.
Balfe, who passed in the late 18th century, John Barnett, who passed in the late 18th century, James Bland, passed in the early 19th century, Carrie Jacobs Bond, and Sir Frederic Hymen Cowen, who passed in the mid 19th century.(Music and Musicians in the Victorian Era) As for musical instruments, musicians used traditional instruments. Such as saxophones, violines, tubas, and so forth. Although, music back then was more “contemporary and humorous in nature”.
Ferdinand De Jean, a Dutch flautist, ordered Mozart to write 4 quartets and 3 flute concertos, but Mozart only completed three quartets and one flute concerto. Instead of composing a brand new flute concerto, he rearranged the oboe concerto he had written earlier that year as the second flute concerto, which is divided into 3 movements: Allegro aperto, Adagio non troppo and Rondo: Allegretto. The concerto is an excellent showpiece and is widely performed by soloists nowadays. Listening to this well-written repertoire, it is hard to believe that Mozart disliked flute or that this piece was originally written for another
Music has been around since the beginning of time. People use it for entertainment, expression, and a form of art. When thinking about classical music (and music in general) the one person that comes to mind is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This paper will go into depth of the cultural significance and meaning of one of Mozart’s most famous pieces, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Mozart’s music was considered to be commercial theatrical and a form of cinematic exploitation, bringing different elements to music that the people have never heard before in the classical era.
I. The violin is an important historical instrument even used by the kings of France and prince of Hungary. This instrument evolved from Asia with the instrument fithele. We get the word fiddle from the word fithele. Although the fithele evolved from Asia, it was mostly used by Europeans in the ninth century.
There are several theories that regard where and when the music originated. The historiographers pointed out that there are different periods of music with each period having its own characteristics, its composers, its instruments, its rhythm and significance to the existing music today. The first three periods; Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque are expounded in this essay. The periods span through different times albeit some overlapped one another. The essay also focuses on the common factor that triggered the existence of the music periods and its impacts on each period.
