Why did the colonists expand westward? Well, at the time the colonists were very close together on the East coast and many people wanted to explore their living westward away from most of the civilization, to make their own. I am thankful for westward expansion because I live in west. The westward expansion was a great help to everyday life. This had great exploration westward for the brave people that decided to endure this excruciating journey.
I believe that the expansion of the frontier after the Civil war played a significant role in easing the social tensions. After the civil war, in the late 19th century, America experienced several changes such as unprecedented process of urbanization and industrialization, the rise of the few huge corporations, various technological advancements, and several rights movements. Because of the westward expansion, people got various opportunities to improve their living. Several reasons behind the westward expansion were population growth, the revolution in transportation, money, and free or slave state debate. Since the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, Indigenous peoples who occupied the lands were constantly being killed, forced off their land, and involuntarily assimilated into white culture. This unfair treatment of Indigenous peoples got significantly worse after Jackson became president. When Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830, it allowed Jackson to relocate any “Indians” living east of the Mississippi River to other parts of America. More than 46,000 Indigenous persons were moved because of the Indian Removal Act.

The railroad was built crossing the western half of America which opened up a father route during 1863 to 1869. It was 1,776 miles long and served for the Atlantic and Pacific coast for the United States including the two railroad companies as well. In less than a century, the expansion has the stretched the U.S. from a lot of states along the eastern seaboard until they reached the pacific. By the year 1845, slavery had been outlawed throughout Europe and there was very little transatlantic slave trade going on due to its abolishment in many countries and their colonies. But in the United States, it was still legal, though widely controversial. As America expanded westward, there was a lot of conflict over whether slavery should expand as well. Immigrants were flooding into America for new opportunities and new ways of life and there was just not enough land to suffice the needs for all of the people. These immigrants were arriving in America in the port cities on the East Coast.
The Civil War was the result of the built up conflict in the nation, the nation was first assembled under a unified ideal, that every US citizen has the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our nation's westward expansion took place in 1787 to 1861. The westward expansion led to economic, cultural and political differences from the North, South and West that would later divide the nation. An economy defines how a region of land prospers as one and grows. The people in the North and South had a different way of using their resources and people.
