The reason why the Civil War started was because there was a lot of contention between the states expansion of properties. The South wished to take slavery into the western territories, while the North was committed to stopping the expansion of slavery. The expansion westward was due to the explosion of cotton textiles,
By registering Missouri as a slave state and drawing the line where slavery allowed in the the United States, the fire of war was kindled. The Missouri Compromise began
The Civil War was the war that tore the united states apart. Most people assume the war was fought only about slavery. But the war was fought for many more reasons. The north, known as the Yankees, or the union. Wanted to abolish slavery, decreases the economy difference in the southern farms and better state and equal rights.
As long as there was a fundamental difference in beliefs throughout the country, conflict would continue. The possible acquisition of land from Mexico led to another point of contention in the slavery debate. When a bill surfaced to appropriate funding to purchase peace with Mexico during the war, a provision was added to prohibit slavery in any newly acquired territory.
Annexing Texas and declaring war caused more problems for Mexico and America. America should have left Texas to Mexico. It caused many security problems to Mexico and brought the issues of slaves. It also seems as if america was “asking” for a war. Mexico did indeed throw the first punch, but America was taunting them.
When Lincoln won election in 1860 as the first Republican president, as he promised to keep slavery out of territories, 7 slave states in the South seceded and formed a new nation since they feared Northerners becoming more powerful under Lincoln; instead, they chose Jefferson Davis as their own President. One of the major causes that led the Americans into the Civil War was caused by slavery. While both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against despotism and persecution, Northerners focused on the oppression
The definition of sectionalism is being loyal to one’s own region or area of the nation rather than the nation as a whole. Regional differences that went on for years were a big cause of the civil war in the United States, sectionalism being a big one. There was a division because of certain political, economic and social issues, all of those things were what contributed to the growth of sectionalism from 1800-1861, when the civil war started. The North and the South had completely different views especially when it came to the topic of slavery.
Slavery, political tension, disagreements between the north and south and the split opinions about Abraham Lincoln were components that contributed to the start of the American Civil War. These factors were the catalyst in the beginning of the Civil War. Slavery was the most influential factor that contributed to the beginning of the Civil War. The North’s support to abolish slavery in all American states was viewed as a violation of constitutional rights by the South, thus creating an extreme hatred between the two sides, and ultimately beginning the Civil War. The south, or “the great cotton empire”, was dependant on slavery to keep the large cotton plantations in business.
The way to handle the situations was from one extreme to another. Anti-Slavery was one of the major views in the North on slavery. These people believed that the institution of slavery was wrong and to get rid of it, popular sovereignty was the answer. Popular sovereignty was the idea that the future state government should decide if they are for or against slavery. The antislavery activists also thought that slavery could be contained, and eventually the act would die out.
One of the wars that I believe has changed the United States the most is the Civil War. The United States was in conflict, the Northern part of the country were free states and the Southern half had slavery. Because the states were divided in half so was the government. Territories, like the Texas territory, wanted to join the United States but because it was a slave-holding territory the people in the North were against it because it would make the slave states outnumber the free states. The Southerners wanted them to join for the same reason.
For example, in the cartoon is state “no, he didn’t this fight, called “the battle of Black Jack, is consider by some historians the first battle of the civil war. This demonstrate that the decision of the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case affected Kansas, which was becoming a tuning place of battles and fights between pro-slavery and anti-slavery people. In conclusion, Kansas, after the declaring the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, became a place of tension and conflict between people from Kansas who were against of slavery, and people from others states that were in favor of slavery and wanted slavery in order to increase their wealth as it was demonstrated in the cartoon “Bleeding Kansas”. Finally, the Dred Scott Decision was of great importance to the United States because it let to the end of slavery in the United

Before the Civil War, the nation was divided between two powerful regions, the North and South. The North and the South disagreed about many issues involving state rights, tariffs, and most importantly, the issue of slavery, which was legal in the South, but not the North. As the United States gained new territory, huge debates erupted over whether or not slavery should be allowed in the area. Southerners feared that
There were ones who were concerned about human rights and equality, and those who were concerned about the amount of representation the addition of slave states took away. The Mexican American war marked an end of such division and unified the abolitionists, which worsened tensions between the abolitionists and the supporters of
