The first century saw an end to the Roman Republic and a new ancient Mediterranean world centralized around the Roman Empire. This time period brought about prolific authors, such as Virgil and Vitruvius, whose texts give us insight into the Roman world that existed two thousand years ago. These Mediterranean societies needed strong settlements as the Northeastern hemisphere was rapidly developing and populations were expanding. As seen in The Aeneid, Aeneas must endure a long journey from Troy and follow his destiny to where it promises his future kingdom in Italy. Conversely, The Ten Books on Architecture is more of a handbook for future architects, including Augustus Caesar, to guide their architectural endeavors successfully. While their motivations may differ slightly, both the architect and Aeneas are focused on founding a city with great importance. Regarding The Aeneid, the epic poem follows Trojan Aeneas and his journey from his destroyed city to his future homeland.
