In the 1800s, there was problems in the United States that could have changed the way our country is today. There was a time where the United States was separated into two different parts. The country was divided into two different parts because the Southern states started to secede from the Union. The country was divided into the North and the South, and there were many reasons that led to the Southern states seceding from the Union. The north and the south had different opinions on things, and they went about things in different ways. For example, the Southern states were slave states and believed in slavery while the Northern states were against slavery and were non-slave states. Overall, the two sides were very different from each other, and the Southern states started to secede. The election of Abraham Lincoln, slavery, and the sides different opinions on things and failed compromises led to the Southern states seceding from the Union. To begin, in the election of 1860, the United States was divided into two political parties, the Republican party and the Democratic party, that then divided the country into the North and the South. This is one of the factors that separated the North and the South. They formed two different parties because they had different beliefs and opinions on things. The Democratic party was mainly in the South, and the Republican party, represented by Abraham Lincoln, was mainly in the North. When Abraham Lincoln was elected, the first few southern states started to secede from the Union. “The decision greatly influenced the nomination of …show more content…
Southern states started to secede after Lincoln was elected, but they seceded because they were scared that he was going to end slavery. The whole Southern economy was based off of slavery because they had an agricultural economy and not an industrial economy like the North. The North and the South were completely different. The North did not need slaves, while the South feared what would happen without slaves. “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth.” Mississippi’s main reason for seceding was because of slavery. They thought that slavery was too important, and they did not want it to be taken away from them. The first seven states to secede from the Union were from the Lower South because they had the highest stake in slavery. Slavery had been argued whether it was right or wrong for many years before the states seceded. Overall, the government tried to keep it equal between slave states and non-slave states so that there was no conflict. There were people who supported slavery while others were against it and tried to abolish it. There were many people in the North called abolitionists that tried to end slavery. Abolitionist would use the Underground Railroad
The War begins March 4, 1861. Major Anderson, the commander in charge of Fort Sumter, and 80 men, reported that the Confederate patience for having a foreign fort in its territory was wearing thin. On April 11, 1861 Confederate Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard sent 500 men to Major Anderson to demand the fort’s surrender. Major Anderson refused and the next day Confederates opened fire on the fort. The fort was continuously under fire for 34 hours until Major Anderson surrendered.
Some Southerners believed that they needed to secede from the nation because they believed Abraham Lincoln, and his Republican majority were a major threat to the institution of slavery. The new Republican Party showed up in the 1850s and they were against the institution of slavery. When the election of 1860 came about, one of the candidates was Abraham Lincoln who just so happened to be a republican. When he won the election alongside his commanding majorities in both houses of Congress, the Southern states panicked, and got afraid that the federal government would stop the continuation of the practice of slavery. In other words, they were afraid that they were going to abolish slavery in the South, which they believed was going to be a problem
In 1860, the U.S. was divided. It was divided into the North, South, and New Territories. It was also divided in terms of their views on slavery. The North believed that slavery was wrong, the South completely supported the idea, and the West was indifferent at the time.
The South, which was known as the Confederate States of America, seceded from the North, which was also known as the Union, for many different reasons. The reason they wanted to succeed was because there was four decades of great sectional conflict between the two. Between the North and South there were deep economic, social, and political differences. The South wanted to become an independent nation. There were many reasons why the South wanted to succeed but the main reason had to do with the North's view on slavery.
Over time, the South had developed different values than the North ,always operating as a separate system. This led to the south’s separation from the North. It began with the secession of South Carolina. Being around the time of the second great awakening, people begin
The main reason for this was because Britannica mentions that since Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, a multitude of Southerners viewed Lincoln’s election as a potential danger to their way of life which may bring about secession (“Why was the U.S. presidential election of 1860 important?” 1). This means that his election threatened Southern living and dependency on slavery, building anxiety. Because of this, eleven Southern states – Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia – seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America, an entirely separate government from the United States of America that could spark a war if need be. Likewise, Abraham Lincoln’s way of thinking also played a detrimental part in the ignition of the Civil War.
The North didn 't like earning less money than the South, so they taxed the South. Anytime a Southerner wanted to export their goods, they had a pay a large tariff. The Southerners felt they were being treated like colonies with no real say in anything. So they did what had to be done, they seceded. Here 's why the south was justified...
The southern region of the United States in the early years of the 1860’s had a most incomparable affect on the country. The disputes between the North and the South had caused a civil war, killing over one half a million people after the South seceded from the Union. The causes driving the South to secede grew to the point where one unified, strong country was no longer an option in the Southerner’s eyes. The Northerners viewed the Southerner’s needs as unnecessary and immoral desires. Due to the two regions differences, outbreaks of violence started a pandemonium.
The economies were running different and the laws were placed using their different views. The Sought was pro slavery and the North was anti-slavery. They didn’t want any slaves in their section but
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
In November 1860, eleven states Southern states seceded from the Union because Abraham Lincoln was elected as the sixteenth
First, Southern states seceded from the Union because of sectionalism. The South had less factories, less soldiers, not a lot of people and not a lot of railroad tracks (Document 2). Which means that the North had bigger and better things than the South, the North had more people to fight back and the North had more railroads meaning more trades for the North. The South needed to seceded from the Union because of sectionalism.
President Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to free slaves of all states. The southern states were outraged and felt like they were mistreated. Not long after, South Carolina seceded from the union because they felt like there was no longer a place for them in the Union. Not long after South Carolina seceded many other southern states felt the same way and seceded as well. The states that seceded soon created the Confederate States of America where they elected Jefferson Davis as their provisional president.
One month after the secession, the Civil War was started. President Lincoln’s election tore apart the nation because the South left the Union as a direct result of his election. It was one of the main causes of the Civil War, and also physically split the Nation into two
The North and the South had many differences that led to the Civil War. Some white Southerners claimed that they were separate from the Northern States of America. In 1860 the North and the South had been slowly separating into two different cultures. After Lincoln was elected Southerners felt powerless. While the North was becoming more modern with social, economical, and political differences the South barely changed.
