On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists associated with the Islamic group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out attacks against the United States. The planes targeted major military and economic centers including The World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon, a fourth plane was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania, but many believe this was intended to hit The White House or congressional building.
