In stories where a character experiences a downfall, there is always something or someone who is to blame. Readers may wonder whenever these kinds of incidents happen. In the William Shakespeare play, Macbeth, the character Macbeth has an incredibly horrible downfall that progresses from the beginning to the end of the play. He starts out a normal man whom the audience would never expect to change in the way he does. As his wife, Lady Macbeth, urges him to kill king Duncan so he can become king, his urge for killing only grows and transforms him into a serial killer.
Lady Macbeth was clearly the more responsible for the murder of king Duncan but overall, Macbeth’s murderous reign has made the cold-blooded character the more evil character in the play. Lady Macbeth may have been more responsible for king Duncan’s death, but she had never expected Macbeth to kill countless of other people just to keep his throne. “I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none.” - Macbeth - Act 1 Scene 7 Line 47 to Line

In contrast to this, Macbeth is consumed by his ambition after being influenced by the witches and his wife. “I murdered you, my son, against my will- you too, my wife…”(1461-1462) Creon regrets his actions by the end of the play. From these lines Sophocles made it even more clear that if you defy the gods, you will surely regret your actions. “Though Birnam Wood be come to Dunsinane and thou
Before Macbeth had thoughts about killing the king he thought to himself.”if chance will have me king, why chance may crown me,without my stir.”(pg.336). He decided to take action instead of letting fate do it on its own. Not only did the three witches tell Macbeth he was going to be king but they also told him he was going to be thane of coward. “All hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter”(pg.333). When Macbeth got a hold of the power and being king he started to treat others with less
His easily impressionable nature causes him to not form his own thoughts, but rather listen to the words of Lady Macbeth and the three witches. At the point of this play the audience can note the change in Macbeth's character. Macbeth's first murder was a trying experience for him, however after the first murder; killing seemed to be the only solution to maintain his reign of the people of Scotland. Through this ambition Macbeth is able to organize these murders without a drop of remorse. This lack of remorse is his shrill that pushes him to continue with his evil conspiracies.
Ambition can also be used as a weapon as we see in Macbeth by the witches. Being overly ambitious, like Macbeth could kill, drive one crazy, and affect those around someone. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are the main causes of evil in the play Macbeth. One of their most evil acts is the murder of Duncan and the responsibility lies with both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. While both have incredible ambition, it is Lady Macbeth's pressure and manipulation that encourage Macbeth to murder Duncan. Therefore, Lady Macbeth’s control and influence over her husband make her equally if not more evil than her husband. Lady Macbeth cares more and dedicates more of her time to this murder compared to Macbeth.
He feared this more than anything else, what would happen after the murder. However it took him until this point to realize all he had sacrificed for a “fruitless crown” (66)that the witches gave him.
