Considering all the facts given during the trial, I believe Tom Robinson to be innocent. During the trial, four key people gave testimonies and underwent cross examination. Mr.Heck Tate, Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and Bob Ewell’s testimonies give significant evidence that Tom Robinson not only did not rape Mayella Ewell, but he is incapable of committing such a physically taxing crime. On the other hand, Bob Ewell, “Mayella’s father, is capable and possibly had a history of abusing her. Tom Robinson is not guilty, because no medical evidence of rape that was ever tested found, Tom Robinson’s crippled arm would have made it impossible to hit Mayella in her right eye, and an insinuation of Bob Ewell’s abuse towards Mayella and dominant left …show more content…
Heck Tate was the first of the witnesses to step up and give their testimony. He described to Atticus Finch about how after see Mayella bruised and beaten on the floor, the first thing he did was to take her to identify Tom Robinson. Following this, no doctor had come to check on Mayella, despite her serious injuries and multiple wounds. On page 190 of To Kill a Mockingbird, it reads “Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor. Asked Atticus. No sir, said Mr. Tate.” Later, during the text, Bob Ewell confirmed this and says that they have never called a doctor in his life and it wasn’t time to start now. This peaked Atticus’s interest, because even though she had just been raped, had been choked, and had a blackened eye, they didn’t seek medical attention. Since Mayella never consulted a doctor, it was never confirmed that she was actually raped. It also makes it seem as though the Ewell family has something to …show more content…
With that information, and the short temper that he exhibited during his testimony, and the hints towards his history of drinking, it wouldn’t be far fetched to believe that he was capable of beating Mayella. In Mayella testimony on page 208, when Atticus asked if Mayella loved her father she was confused by the question. After some clarification Mayella said “He does tollable, ‘cept when- … Except when nothing.” This hesitation left room for question about how Bob treated Mayella when no one was watching. Later in the text, during Tom Robinson’s testimony, he states “ She said she never kissed a grown man before an’ she might as well kiss a nigger. She says what her papa do to her don’t count,” This further confirmed that Bob Ewell has been mistreating Mayella and insinuated that he was assaulting her. This knowledge coupled with Bob Ewell’s known drinking habits suggests that he is capable of giving Mayella the injuries that he claimed came from Tom
During the trial, Tom Robinson revealed that Mayella’s father verbally and sexually abuses her. Tom states “She says she never kissed a grown man before. She says what her papa do to her don’t count.” (Doc. B) After Mr. Ewell caught Tom and Mayella, he called Mayella a “goddamn whore” and threatens her by saying “I’ll kill ya.” (Doc. B)
EVIDENCE Atticus said ¨Did you call a doctor sir? Anybody call a doctor¨ ¨No sir¨ said, Mr. Tate (Lee 190). This piece of evidence shows that Heck Tate did not investigate right because if he did then he would have called a doctor for Mayella's bruises. Sheriff Heck Tate says,¨
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book that is full of life lessons. The book opens with Jean Louise Finch, better known as Scout, telling of their family history. One day, while outside playing, they find a little boy named Charles Baker Harris, also known as Dill. These three start to get into many shenanigans, including investigating the mystery of Arthur "Boo" Radley; he hasn't been seen in years. There are a lot of theories surrounding him and why he doesn't come out, but we finally find out why at the end of the book.
Both mayella and the girls clamied to be rapped by a black man. Like mayella never got checked by a doctor. “The cross-examination of Victoria Price lasted only minutes”(Linder2). As you can see Victoria didn’t get thoroughly checked. If she was then it would have taken longer than that.
During the Great Depression, people had to do anything to get what they needed. One specific case, called The Scottsboro Boys Trial, follows the case of a group of 9 black boys who encounter trouble when they jump into a moving train car containing food and a group of white people. The white people were hoarding all of the food so they and the black people got into a fight. After losing the fight and getting kicked off the train, the white group of people (who had 2 girls dressed as males) falsely accused the black people of rape and the jury found them guilty, even though there was no medical evidence. Harper Lee bases the characters and their situations in her book To Kill a Mockingbird off of her real life, since her father was the defense
Mayella has gotten verbally abused because Atticus asked her “except when he’s drinking? Asked Atticus so gently that Mayella nodded. ”(Doc B) Mayella has also been physically abused because Atticus said “What did her father do? We don’t know, but there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left. ”(Doc B)
Heck Tate, Maycomb’s sheriff, is a good guy, who’s job is to maintain law and order inside the town. Being the sheriff, it is his job to follow the evidence and trace it back. When Miss Mayella Ewell is “abused” by a strong black man, she says that the attacker was Tom Robinson. “So I went down to Robinson’s house and brought him back. She identified him as the one, so I took him in.
Ewell v. Robinson, The Rape Case that Rocked the Nation By: Hailey Ellwanger After hours of jury deliberation, the case of Ewell v. Robinson has reached its conclusion. The jury finding the defendant Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell. This case is a prime example of the injustice that can occur when juries listen to their prejudices instead of the evidence. The two different sides of the story vastly differ, the jury ruling in favor of the Ewell’s.
People tend to believe that trial by jury is the best way to keep the trial completely fair to both parties involved. In some cases, though, it is the opposite of that. One of these cases is in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the trial, Tom Robinson, a black man, was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of a white family. Tom’s attorney, Atticus, was able to prove that Tom was innocent, but the verdict was that Tom was guilty.
Then some people thought that Tom was innocent but the judge decided to make Tom go to prison. In the book it said that Mayella hugged and kissed Tom on the cheek. From this I can infer that Mayella is desperate and can get away with this because Tom Robinson is a black person. This reminds me of a couple southern movies I’ve watched where black people are always the first to suspect because of their color. Tom Robinson on trial for his life said Bob Ewell yelled “whore I’ll kill you” when he saw Mayella kiss Tom from the window.
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
First, Tom is later shown in trial to be trustworthy and not have anything to hide. Second, Bob is well known to be an alcoholic and abusive person, meaning that he likely beat Mayella himself out of anger. It would explain why he does not call for a doctor, and this cemented by the fact that he does not take enough care of his kids. Third, Bob claims that Tom beat Mayella face on the right side, but Tom's left arm was unusable from when it was caught in a cotton
Intro “Being misunderstood doesn't mean you're the issue sometimes it's the people that misunderstand you with all the issues.” (unknown) Being misunderstood is preventing people from knowing who the person truly is and making them feel all alone and like they are the problem. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the people in Maycomb make inferences on who the misjudged are. In Maycomb, people are judged by their actions, appearances, and what everybody thinks the people have done, but in reality, these false accusations set up a barrier between the misunderstood and everyone else.
A novel called To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. There is a case between an African American named Tom Robinson and a white woman named Mayella Ewell. She accused him of raping her. Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
First, Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty because he was right handed. Mayella the victim, was punched in the face on the night of the crime. On page 235, Mr. Heck Tate stated that Mayella had a black eye on her right eye
