There are many different types of friendships, ranging from lifelong friends to toxic friends, and even imaginary friends too. Although there are many different types of friendships from the ones listed, nearly all of them can be organized into one of the three friendship categories made by Aristotle. In the novella of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have nothing but themselves as they move around to find work during the Great Depression, and have developed a unique relationship that can fall under one of these categories. The three categories are friendships of pleasure, utility, and virtue. Friendships of pleasure are described as a bond that is formed with you and the person whose company brings you joy, either seeing them at work or school, …show more content…
George acted as if it was a chore to look out for Lennie, but he made sure to take good care of him, and made sure that others knew that Lennie was a good guy and a great worker, even though he wasn't the brightest. Lennie and George's friendship can be described differently, but if it was to be categorized as one of Aristotle’s friendship types, I would put them into the virtue category. I would do this because although George has to take care of Lennie all the time, and most of the time it’s a pain for him, George does genuinely care for Lennie and respects him, and Lennie does the same for George. They’ve been through a lot together, and even if something was Lennie’s fault, George never left his side and continued to stay with him. Their friendship is very heartwarming and genuine. At the end of the book when Curley went to search for and kill Lennie, George did the right thing, even if it meant he had to kill Lennie. George was there to make sure that Lennie had a peaceful and painless death instead of what Curley would do to Lennie if he saw him first. What George did showed lots of respect, even though he really didn’t want to kill him. This part in the book allows the readers to understand that
Curley was going to kill him anyway though, and at least he was granted a quick and painless death. Moreover, that George was selfish and killed Lennie so that he could be free, but he was never fully free after that. He was forced to live the rest of his life with the guilt of killing his best friend.
Curley’s hatred toward Lennie was led not only because Lennie killed his wife, but because Lennie humiliated him by breaking his hand. George also does the right thing by killing Lennie because he stopped him from causing more deaths or harming others
(Steinbeck 34). George positively talks about Lennie and says how strong he is, and how he is not smart. George is supporting Lennie in this instance. George is very supportive and protective of Lennie because this is George’s
George is a true friend to Lennie because, even though he doesn’t show it all the time, he loves Lennie. He supports Lennie and his dreams to own a farm of rainbow bunnies, even though they don’t exist. According to the article “The Measure of Friendship” it states “it was okay to be an outcast, and what the true measure of friendship was” (Davis, Zac. " The measure of friendship.
In the book mice of men by John Steinbeck, I believe that George and Lennie share a friendship of utility. Aristotle describes the friendship of utility as “friendships based on utility are for people who associate with others for their mutual usefulness”(Aristotle). This resembles George and Lennie's friendship because Lennie needs George because he is the only one willing to take care of him, and George needs Lennie because Lennie can get them both jobs easily due to his size. If George didn't have Lennie it would be harder for him to get a job, and if Lennie didn't have George he would have no one to take care of him. George and Lennie are going to the ranch, and George says.
The relationship between George and Lennie is closer than a casual friendship. The first reason why George and Lennie have a close friendship is because George takes care of Lennie. George takes care of Lennie because they have been friends for a long time. For example, Lennie likes to find mice, but George takes the mice away because Lennie always kills them. Another reason why George and Lennie have a close friendship is because they are always together.
Lennie then went and hid down by the riverbank to wait for George. When George found him, he understood what he had to do; “George raised the gun and seated it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head” (Steinbeck 106). The act of George ending Lennie’s life serves as a reminder of their true friendship. By sparing Lennie from Curley’s wrath, or a life behind bars, George displays his profound loyalty. Though the decision to take Lennie’s life was hard for George, it serves as a reminder of his undeniable devotion as a devoted friend.
Loyalty is one of the most important things you could ever ask for in a friendship. Without loyalty, the friendship is far from genuine. George and Lennie declare their loyalty to each other many times
A healthy friendship includes two people who both feel the same, without them both feeling equal, the friendship falls into shambles. John Steinbeck illustrated how a one-sided relationship doesn’t end well by using George and Lennie's friendship. From when they start working on the ranch and have trouble fitting in, to when George has trouble keeping Lennie from starting trouble with the boss. In of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses George and Lennie's relationship, Curley’s Wife giving up friendships to stay with Curley, and Candy realizing he needed to feel sad to make his dog happy to display how difficult sacrifices need to be made in a true friendship Although Lennie was a kind warmhearted person, he still struggled to find and make friends. No matter how hard he tried George was still his only friend, for Lennie though, this was beneficial.
Because of Lennie, George was able to believe in a dream. The author shows this when George says, “I knowed we’d never do her. He usta like to her about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would” (95) which shows how without Lennie, he is without hope. Then in the end of the book, Lennie had escalated from accidentally killing mice, to puppys, then to a woman. Therefore George had to do what was best for Lennie and others, by killing him.
The relationship between the characters George and Lennie is a strong example of friendship in this novel. George and Lennie had been friends since they were kids; Lennie has always relied on George to get him out of tough situations since he is mentally challenged. When George and Lennie had arrived at the ranch the boss was wondering why Lennie couldn’t speak for himself; and that is when George had to step in, “George said, ‘He’s my … cousin. I told his old lady I’d take care of him.
However at the end, Lennie caused an incident and forced George to kill Lennie. But all and all, I believe George was a good friend. First of all, George would always try to get Lennie out of trouble in many situations. The first situation that the book tells us was when George pulled Lennie out of Weed, when Lennie grabbed a girl’s dress, scaring her so much that she thought Lennie was going to rape her, and the town tried to lynch Lennie (Steinbeck-11). Another example is when right before they got to the ranch, George told Lennie to hide in the bush and wait for him if he got in trouble (Steinbeck 15).
A true friendship is something that everyone wants to have but not everyone can have it. in the novella Of Mice and Men the author shows the true meaning of friendship and these 2 best friends Lennie and George shows that they have Friendship and they love each other, care for each other and always have their backs i give some really great evidence and try to show you the relationship these guys had. Through the book George one of the two main characters he shows how he cares and takes care of his good friend the other important character Lennie, who was a mental disability but he still loves him but he does show some tough love. In the book George has been shown numerous times that he takes care of Lennie but the first quote It 's because Lennie was in trouble he was about to die,but his friend does something really beautiful “Couldn 't we just lock him up the poor bastards nuts{steinbeck 87}”In this quote he 's trying to convince the guys who were about to kill him by saying he didn 't know what he was doing,This quote means that he really cares for his friend and he 's trying to save him.
Friendship is the relationship between George and Lennie. The friendship between Georgie and Lennie can be interpreted as brotherhood and the relationship between father and son. Brotherhood is implied because both George and Lennie share a relationship of honesty and love, even though they may not show it. When Lennie gets a little out of line, George gets very irritated and makes it apparent. However, no matter how much Lennie bothers him, George wants to protect Lennie.
In conclusion, George loves Lennie and Lennie loves George and they help each other when one needs a helping hand. In a larger view, friendship can come in many different shapes and sizes; you can help physically, mentally, or just be there for them in their time of need. For a friendship to work everyone needs to pitch in and share what has been
