But in the 1820s, they came up with a new way to farm where they would grow cash crops. Most of these big farms were in the South. What made farming take off was the invention of the cotton gin. The cotton gin was big because it worked much faster than using your hands. Most people Wanted to start farming because of all the money and food that they would get. However, since the cotton gin worked so fast the people in the fields were getting behind on their work so they farmers needed to hire slaves to pick the cotton. Factories in the Nouth grew from this and started to gain lots of money. Because of all the big shipments going through they created railroads so they would be sent faster. This allowed more cotton to be processed quicker which made production of cotton more efficient for farmers.
