Americans are known around the world for their American spirit, notorious for the unsaid motto of, ‘My country, right or wrong’. However, America was not the only country known for its nationalistic ideals. If one were to take a trip back in time, they would find ancient Romans giving America a run for their money. While ancient Rome did not have a Fourth of July, one could argue that Americans are the modern-day ancient Romans in terms of patriotism. Modern Americans are quite similar to the ancient Romans in their love for their country. In terms of patriotism, modern Americans are quite similar to ancient Romans. This can be demonstrated by the triumphs held after Roman victories. After battles in which Rome won, the senate would host giant parades called triumphs in honor of the military commander who led the legions to victory. Triumphs are similar to the American holiday the Fourth of July. Both last one day, and celebrate war victories. In the end, one can see the similarities between modern-day Americans and ancient Romans when observing the way both groups of people celebrate war victories. …show more content…
Julius Caesar, one of the most famous of Rome’s emperors, was even made a god after his death. While Americans do not call their politicians gods, they are still considered a part of the highest social class, way above anyone else, the same thing ancient Romans did for their leaders. Ultimately, the way those in the upper political class are treated adds another thing to the list of what made ancient Romans and modern Americans so
The legacy of Ancient Rome is still felt today in western culture in areas such as government, law, language, architecture, engineering, and religion. Government Many modern-day governments are modeled after the Roman Republic. Concepts such as balance of powers, veto, and representation all were developed and recorded by the Romans. The United States has three branches of government similar to the Roman Republic. The Executive Branch (President) is similar to the elected consuls of Rome.
First of all, In the passage “Roman influence on american government” it is more about america but has Rome in it. “The founding fathers of america faced a big problem”. They were talking at a meeting and they needed a new government. Then there was a picture that said it was in ancent rome and said the sentence was having a meeting for law. So Rome and America were and maybe still are alike.
Henry and Griggs’ article share points, such as, valuing one’s opinion, freedom, and that America is strong. The article, on cnn.com, starts off by naming the stereotypical events of patriotism. Griggs writes, “We think we know patriotism when we see it. A veteran in uniform, saluting a July
Many Americans today many not be the most familiar with ancient Greek and Roman history but our founding fathers certainly were and in “their quest to match the deeds of the ancients the founders became our heros… [t]he founders drove the ancients from their pedestals and occupied their places” (ix). Carl J. Richard seeks to highlight the influence the ancients had on our founders. I believe that Richard is very effective in accomplishing his goal of demonstrating what lessons the founding fathers learned from the greeks and the romans as well as how those ideas shaped the foundations of the American government. He accomplished this through his use of clear and specific examples throughout greek and roman history and he showcases direct connections
For example, in Henry Clay’s speech in congress on March 31, 1824, he shows how Americans allowed their patriotism to affect their policies. As the pride in their home country increased, Americans began to want to develop a policy that was its own. In this speech, the influence of American patriotism is obvious, with Clay saying that the only “remedy” to the impending decay of the country was through adopting a “genuine American system.” This “genuine system” was one where the influence of sectionalism/nationalism is plainly evident; the system called for enacting a tariff that promoted American industry by taxing foreign industry. While patriotism did help to improve American industry and make the country more self-sufficient, it certainly hindered foreign relations and the offshore economy.

Rome warfare was characterized by great ferocity and the roman pursuit of victory was determined. Rome gave many good ideas; the senate was ruled by the people of Rome. The Roman Republic Government was a large complex constitution, which was secure by many checks and balances, so that no man could have complete control.
Similarities That American Society Shares With Ancient Greece Ancient Greece produced many patterns and fashions that America has imitated. This civilization, more than any other, has molded what Americans observe and use architecturally today. Everywhere people look, they can see designs from Ancient Greece in this country. America has been inspired and influenced by the Greeks; therefore, there are replicated ideas of ancient Greece seen in many of America’s buildings. In the United States’ capital, there are buildings, especially the Capitol, which have borrowed ideas and patterns from some of Greece’s structures.
Loss of patriotism is one thing that America has in common with Rome. When Rome was falling, patriotism decreased tremendously. There was no sense of pride. Citizens did not fight as hard, overthrew empires, and would cheat taxes. The same thing is happening in America today.
Rome Impact On Today's U.S. There are many reasons on why Rome or Greece is better than the other in the categories of math, technology and even the military, But that's not the point I’m trying to get across I'm writing about how much of an impact these countries have made in modern day, here are my reasons why Rome has overcome that aspect. Ultimately there are more differences such as Rome's change to monotheism and Native America's continuation of polytheism. There are some interesting similarities between Classical Rome and Native American civilizations that contributed to each society. Classical Rome left garrisons behind in conquered land to establish a society and maintain control. This is similar to the Incas, who also left garrisons behind to establish a society, it is also said that they left garrisons to set an example for how the conquered people should act and live.
