“Beowulf” is a piece of literature that is considered to be a poem. The poem consists of how Beowulf has to kill Grendel’s mother. Beowulf has to go to the floor of the lake and into Grendel’s mothers lair to try to defeat her. Eventually, Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother. In “The Lord of the Rings,” Gandolf has to save his people from being attacked and killed by the Balrog. Gondola has to go through many battles in different places to kill Balrog, but he comes out victorious.

He says that their lives are guided by the heroic code. Then Beowulf proclaims that he will go fight Grendel's mother and Grendel in an underwater battle and then he sets off. On his way, he is captured by Grendel’s mom and taken. But, when he tries to fight back with his sword the sword does nothing to her causing him to start fighting with his bare hands. Then he discovers a weapon that could help him defeat his enemy and it is a great sword.
Soon after, Grendel’s mother wanted vengeance for her son and begun to kill more men in Herot. Beowulf found the mother’s home and killed her and Grendel at once. Towards the end of the epic poem, he also defeated a dragon with the help of Wiglaf. Other soldiers went to the cave with Beowulf but when he needed their help, they all cowered away while Wiglaf went to help his king. The scene showed how not everyone can face the same bravery as Beowulf once did.

Many, in fact most, classical texts and origin myths were not written down in their original form. As most stories started out verbally and were repeated and spread by bards they were subject to deviance from the original narrative. By the time most of these stories were actually written down it had been not only many years since the events they describe, in the case of Beowulf and The Iliad hundreds of years, but it had also been many years since the myths had first been told and started passing from bard to bard. This fact is important because with many years between a stories creation and its first written record it becomes hard to know what of the story was original and what was embellished. In the case of many of these tales, culture had
