The Civil War is the bloodiest U.S. war up to this date (“The Civil…”). It claimed the lives of 620,000 soldier. It also wounded. It also wounded over 400 thousand. (“The American…”). The two opposing sides were the North and the South. The North, known also as the Union, was against slavery of African Americans and wanted it abolished. The South, also known as the Confederacy, believed in slavery. The South depended on slave labor for agriculture and their economy. The North thought it was morally wrong to enslave a man or woman. They also didn’t like that slaves took up many jobs that other people would want. After the war ended, the south was put into a Reconstruction Era. Many things made the life in the South hard. Without slaves their economy was ruined. The North helped the South rebuild during the Reconstruction Era. Many changes took place to form a new, unified America. These changes included inflation, discrimination, sharecropping, new amendments and the presidential election of 1876. …show more content…

Before the Civil War, the South had 9.5 million people and out of those 3.5 million were slaves. Now that slavery was abolished the South lost 3.5 non-paid slaves that used to work under terrible conditions (Faragher 165). This was not the only thing that hurt the South’s economy. The South also suffered losing 40% of its livestock, 50% of its farm machinery, and thousands of miles of railroads were destroyed. The South accounted for 30% of the nation’s wealth, but after the war it only accounted for 12%. (Garcia 523). The inflation was so bad that it even hurt the North economy. This was a very hard time for many people in the South and the North, but they soon hoped that after the Reconstruction Era was over they would be a united America.
