Introduction:
A natural and organic food store called Whole Foods Market had established in Austin, Texas, in 1980. (Whole Foods Market, 2021). Our goal is to nurture both humans and plants, according to our mission statement (Whole Foods Market, 2021). Sustainable energy, renewable agriculture, food waste reduction, and pollinator conservation are all effective marketing techniques for a business that specialty in providing clients with organic, natural goods (Whole Foods Market, 2021).

• Transforming Waste into Energy
By 2030, Whole Foods Market promises to cut down on food waste by half. (Whole Foods Market, 2021). Reducing food waste keeps it out of landfills and gives it to those in the community who don't have enough to eat. Sending food to animal feed mills is an additional way to keep it out of landfills. Whole Foods uses faulty ingredients in their prepared food, bakery, and seafood sections before putting them out for garbage (Whole Foods Market, 2021). Scraps from the seafood do put into seafood soup and other items in that sector to utilize every last bit. (Whole Foods Market, 2021).
Additionally, Whole Foods uses an anaerobic digester to transform food that can be recycled or given (Whole Foods Market, 2021). We used to have an anaerobic digester where I used to work. It turned methane gas, a byproduct of food processing, into a fuel that could use to run the building. Both producers and retailers of food can profit from this renewable energy source.

The business we chose to focus our project on is Publix Supermarkets. On Sept. 6, 1930, founder George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven Florida. Today Publix has grown to be Florida’s largest employer with 168,500 employees and run 1,080 stores. Total sales in 2013 were 28.9 billion, relatively large for a regional corporation. Their mission statement is “To be the premier food quality retailer in the world,” and they’re doing an excellent job at it.
I originally thought about the word organic as fruits and vegetables picked freshly from the branches of a tree and packaged into stores and chickens wandering large fields, I realize that it is not that simple. Michael Pollan traced some of his organic purchases back to their sources and discovers that there are organic feedlots, organic dairy cows whose lives are not any nicer than the conventional, and organic “free-range” chickens whose only access to the outside world is a small door in their shed, which is only open for about two weeks. “The organic movement, as it was once called, has come a remarkably long way in the last thirty years, to the point where it now looks considerably less like a movement than a big business” (Pollan 138). My thoughts now on organic foods at supermarkets such as Wegmans and Walmart is that the animals aren’t treated as great as conventional foods. I’ve realized that the extra cost of organic that I pay is largely because of the transportation.
“Our customers trust that the products we bring to market are sourced from reputable suppliers who provide safe and fair working conditions for their workers. Kroger is working to ensure an ethical supply chain for the products sold in our stores (Kroger).” They plan to have 100% sustainable seafood, cage-free eggs, and sourced palm-oil. Kroger wants to not only meet but exceed the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Zero Waste” policies. It also plans to improve transportation efficiency.

This world-famous warehouse club has come a long way since opening its first location. Established in 1978, Whole Foods Market opened its first store in Austin, Texas in 1980. This natural supermarket was the first certified organic food supermarket in the U.S. Now, 456 stores stretch across the nation, Canada, and the U.K. (see appendix A with the various states and locations) with 35,000-50,000 SKU’s lining the shelves. Whole Foods sets high standards for not only it’s product freshness but also expectations of employees. High customer service, environmental stewardship, positive impact on local and global communities, and high return on invested capital has made Whole Foods Market an industry leader being 5th largest public produce and food retailer.
Single-handedly, they have been able to target a vast array of consumers as well as destigmatize their brand as being upscale or inaccessible to the everyman. For reference, the company is often referred to as "Whole Paycheck," as a way of highlighting one of the most negative side effects of eating organic ("Whole Foods Tries to Shake 'Whole Paycheck' Rep with Cheaper Spinoff"). Whole Foods holds a negative stereotype as being something that only wealthy people can afford, something that is both unfortunate and realistic at the same time. Whole Foods, is showing that two “average joes,” can not only purchase high quality, stereotypically masculine food items; but also, a brand that appeals to vegans. Which has followers of a paleo diet and has achieved a great deal of brand exposure.
I think that John Mackey has a respectable indispensable vision for Whole Foods. He tries synonymous with passing on the most significant quality typical and characteristic supports available and being the best sustenance retailer in every gathering in which Whole Foods stores are found. This is a noteworthy target for a business, however since its establishment in 1980, Whole Foods has made sense of how to twist up this. The mission statement "Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet" is a perfect mission for Whole Foods. It is immediate and easy to review.
Whole Foods grocery stores throughout the United States and England. Whole Foods also gives away vast amounts of food to those in needs and contribute to schools and food banks. Contributing food, time, and money as a for-profit company can be seeing as a tax break, or as a poor investment according to many fortunes five-hundred
Organic Food Organically grown food tastes better, it’s safer, and it’s healthier for you. The major benefit of organic farming is the reduction of pollution. People who eat organic food eat it, not only, because they enjoy it but also because of the benefits it has. In the book, Young Readers Edition: The Omnivore's Dilemma: The Secrets behind What You Eat, Pollan explains that Industrial Organic is food grown on large industrial size farms with all natural pesticides and no chemicals. It is sold in large supermarket chains, and one of the most common is Whole Foods.
At the same time, it stirred up such controversy that brought about the ban on DDT for agricultural purposes and inspired the formation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. By 1968, Stewart Brand printed Whole Earth Catalog by developing a network for buyers and sellers who may want to be involve with environmental sustainability. Frontier Natural Products Co-op of Iowa started its two-person operation (1976); followed by Coleman Natural Meat (1979) which received the initial USDA stamped of approval to have the label “natural” on it; Whole Foods Market opened its first store (1980); Frontier Natural Products
Ben and Jerry’s Homemade Holdings Inc. was founded in 1978 by two school friends: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. The two friends did not have the best of luck in college and led them to take a course on how to make ice cream in 1977 at Pennsylvania State University. In 1978 with an initial investment of $12,000, they opened a small ice cream parlor in what used to be a gas station in Burlington, Vermont (About Ben & Jerry's). When their popularity later grew, they started to pack their ice cream in pints and later franchises started opening up in different towns across the state of Vermont. In 1985, their factory opened which was open to the public and allowed customers to see behind the scenes how the ice cream was being made.
Many people choose to eat only organic because it’s said to be healthier but when compared to non-organic food the difference is slim. Regardless people continue to buy organic products. People get emotionally connected to
b) Ethical implications related to this case: Whole Foods Market’s core values include “satisfying, delighting and nourishing customers” as well as “practicing and advancing environmental stewardship”. Whole Foods claimed that the pre-peeled oranges were aimed at customers who appreciated the convenience, but it seems that they are satisfying their consumers’ needs at the expense of the environment, as they are not only producing more waste, but also potentially wasting food, as the pre-peeled oranges would rot faster. They are able to act on one of their core values, but contradicting themselves on another core value, making one wonder whether these core values are really at the heart of all their operations and management, or just another marketing practice to be manipulated whenever needed so as to differentiate from other competitors.
Food can be bought and wasted because of the ample amounts bought. Although, one may not give to the poor people of the world, food can be gone to compost, or can be used to make new food. Many belittle the fact that food waste is harmful to society. The first article, “U.S. throws away half of all food produce” By Suzanne Goldenberg explains how Fresh produce is often wasted in fields, warehouses, supermarkets, restaurants, and refrigerators. The second article, “How Norway is selling out-of-date food to help tackle waste” By Daniel Boffey shows A supermarket in Norway which is dedicated to selling expired and old food.
The world is experiencing a dilemma today. Many people suffer from hunger, malnutrition, and other problems caused by the lack of sufficient food. However, many other people buy or order excessive foods and waste a lot. In my community, food waste is much more serious than food shortage, and it is easy to see that people throw foods in the dustbin and the foods indeed are still eatable. Food waste is a serious problem.
