Colors could have several different meanings. They could relate to emotions or the way someone is feeling. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby he uses several different colors to symbolize beauty, money, social class, tranquility, and fantasy. Throughout the entire novel Gatsby fights to show how rich he is and in several different occurrences he does this through color. Fitzgerald wrote this novel using many descriptive words, but color was one of his main ways of expressing what was going on through extreme symbolism. White is the color Daisy wears throughout the entire novel, this color represents pure beauty. It symbolizes nobleness and purity. In the novel, Fitzgerald mentions blue on several different occasions: blue gardens, blue leaves, blue eyes, and a blue lawn. “In his blue gardens men and woman came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.” (Fitzgerald 39). The blue tone of Gatsby's garden reveals his loneliness and melancholy in his inner heart. He always holds lavish parties; however, he never attends them leaving the parties feeling blue with a sense of emptiness. Blue also symbolizes the fantasy and illusion of dream.
