In Dante’s Inferno, the protagonist Dante strays off the Path of True Way and journeys through Hell. Alongside him is his guide Virgil. As Dante travels through all nine circles of Hell, he sees suffering souls and important figures in his time wandering aimlessly and enduring agonizing torture. This journey through Hell makes for a good story; however, Dante’s excursion symbolizes a more in-depth concept.
Dante’s Inferno holds many symbols of other ideas, however the most significant symbol is evident in his journey. The symbol of a journey that the Inferno contains play an important element in the story. In the beginning of the poem, Dante walks a path but strays off of it. In Dante’s Inferno, the ideas of justice, good and evil, and suffering in hell are implied. The idea of suffering in hell and the idea of justice are closely related. Dante indicates that those suffering in hell have committed crimes that are being punished in a reasonable way and that we should not have pity for them. He uses the setting and his organization of hell to transmit these ideas and his philosophy regarding these ideas. The organization of hell helps us understand that Dante believed it was a person’s poor decisions and not cruel fate that got a person in hell.
In Stanley J. Kozikowski article, “Damned in a Fair Life: Cheever’s ‘The Swimmer’”, infers that The Swimmer is a “spiritual allegory in the fashion of Dante” (367). He also argues that Cheever’s story is autobiographical on Neddy’s part and “reveals itself as an uneasy pilgrimage to hell” (367). Kozikowski draws very specific sections and details of The Swimmer and presents the parallels in Inferno, such as: the attitudinal similarities between Neddy Merrill and Dante the pilgrim, the likeness Cheever’s multiple pools and their environments share with the different circles and rivers of Dante’s hell, and references some of The Swimmer’s speech and characters that uncannily reflect that of Inferno. "The Inferno" is the first book in the epic poem called the “Divine Comedy” by the Italian politician Dante Alighieri and it is followed by "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso”. The book "Inferno", which is the Italian translation for Hell, tells the journey of its author through what he believes is Hell, which consists of nine circles of pain and suffering. In his journey, he is guided through the nine circles by the Roman poet Virgil. Each circle in the book represents a different type of sin with a different type of punishment, varying according to the degree of the offense they committed in their life. By the end of his journey through all of the circles, Dante realizes and emphasizes the perfection of God's Justice and the significance of each offense towards God’s unconditional love.
Within the narritive Dante's Inferno, Dante decided to include Classical and Biblical figures to create allusions. Some of these figures include Paola and Francesca, the 12 deciples, Flippo Argenti, Aristotle and even the Christ himslef. Throughout the journey that Dante and Virgil take, they face various obstacles questioning their strength to go further. The allusions that Dante includes help construct the meaning throughout the Canto's by having references to look back on and compare to. For example; Paopla and Francesca with their lovers quarrel, Christ coming down into the underworld to save those who have not committed a sin and is residing in the Noble Castle.
The Inferno is again a story about Dante Alighieri’s own idea of what he thought Hell would be and look like. He observes the punishments being acted upon, the punishment itself is correlating to the sin itself and committed. In our project, they’re two sides divided; one to be looked at as Hell and the other in this case the celestial or Pardiso. We had put together on the Hell side, all the nine circles and the sinners involved, representing the bad. On the celestial and or Pardiso side, we put together: The Three Blessed Ladies and Virgil, representing the good.
Dante’s inferno is a comedy where the main characters are Dante and Virgil. Dante is a pro-famous writer and also a poet. We see Virgil as Dante’s idol and also a Roman Poet. In accordance to the comedy, Dante wanders as he goes off the right and straight path related to the moral truth and then he ends up getting lost in the dark. When he is about to get attacked by three beasts, Virgil rescues him.

In Dante’s Inferno, the character of Virgil acts as a guide through Hell and Purgatory. In addition to this, it is almost universally agreed that Virgil is a depiction of the full extent of human intellect and that he also acts as a microcosm of how a good government should act. There are many reasons for this belief, such as how helpful he is throughout the two books he is in and where he is located in hell. The author Dante does something extra with Virgil and the character Dante though. Virgil is a representation of the Empire like Rome that Dante wanted to be established, and his relationship with Dante is a microcosm of the Church and the State.

Virgil guides Dante through the nine Circles of Hell. Throughout the poem, the readers see numerous examples of Dante always asking questions towards Virgil, and showing his emotions. Virgil guided Dante through Hell with his wisdom and reason.
In Dante’s Inferno, he writes about his journey through hell for the purpose of recognizing his sins. He goes through this journey with Virgil, a voice of reason for Dante. Dante meets people through his journey of the many circles in the Inferno that lead him down into the center of hell, where Satan is. Satan is seen as being monster-like with three heads, representing a mocking of the Trinity and blowing his wings around the cocytus river. The final thing seen here is the fact that Dante’s description of Satan is a bit disappointing compared to the other descriptions he has written about the inferno.

In Inferno, Dante is the main character who is fighting between good and evil, which translates to be the theme of the story. Dante explores deeply the Christian hell and heaven, which includes the immediate Purgatory. This experience makes him cast his allegiance to good and God. The differences between these two stories are depicted when comparing the epic conventions, epic characteristics, and when comparing the various religious backgrounds of the times in which these two stories were written.
Although John Milton’s Paradise Lost remains to be a celebrated piece recounting the spiritual, moral, and cosmological origin of man’s existence, the imagery that Milton places within the novel remains heavily overlooked. The imagery, although initially difficult to recognize, embodies the plight and odyssey of Satan and the general essence of the novel, as the imagery unravels the consequences of temptation that the human soul faces in the descent from heaven into the secular realms. Though various forms of imagery exist within the piece, the contrast between light and dark imagery portrays this viewpoint accurately, but its interplay and intermingling with other imagery, specifically the contrasting imagery of height and depth as well as cold and warmth, remain to be strong points
