“You are surrounded, as we have constantly shown you thoughout this book, with an infinate number of comforts and conveniences which had no existence two or three centuries ago and those comforts are not used only by a few, but are within the reach of almost all men” (8). The Industrial Revolution, which took place in about the 1760s to the 1820s, was a period when rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. This means that these societies turned from manual labor to machinery. Due to this rapid change of events, there was an increase in jobs, and goods and services were produced faster, but many jobs were filled by children and there were also a numerous amount of deaths. According to The Working Man's Companion, “Your houses are built better, your clothes are cheaper, you have an infinate number of domestic utensils” (8). This quote explains that due to the Industrial Revoltuion goods and services became cheaper and more efficient since factories were able to mass produce them. In addition, The Working Man's Campanion also stated, “You can travel cheaply from place to place, and not only travel at less expense, but travel ten times quicker that two hundred years ago” (8). This excerpt is demonstarting how the Industrial Revolution also impacted transportation by transforming horse-drawn wagons to steam powered locomotives, which improved trade and created jobs. However, some of the conditions the people experienced were unnecessary. For example the testimony of Joseph Hebergam to the Sadler Committee describes that the working conditions in the factories caused the workers to suffer from illnesses, injuries, and some even death due to being overworked, an insufficient diet and an unsafe workplace (3).
